I wouldnt try that......take him to a vet to get them cleaned and properly diagnosed. Hard food, RAW bones, rubber chew toys with hard nubs keep the teeth clean and gums massaged.

Brushing the dogs teeth is always helpful... as for the chewy things.. be very careful to not get things like greenies and nylabone plastic chew bones.. research has shown that they break off and when they are swallowed they don't digest and it causes serious issues. You can take the dog back to the vet and have the teeth cleaned for a very reasonable price. Since, I take it from your question, you have never had the teeth cleaned before, you should talk to your vet, find out the best type of brush for your dogs mouth as they are not all alike and it depends on how receptive to have them brushed. Then you can talk to the vet about a professional cleaning at a very reasonable price and they will check for any conditions with the mouth then... There are dog toothpastes out there and you don't want to use a flouride toothpaste on the dog because it is a poison to the animals. The best type of chewy to get is a digetable rawhide chewy that is veteranarian recommended. I get mine from PetCo and they are formulated to dissolve if they get swallowed so you don't get the blockage problem. Don't get a chewy so small that your dog can swallow it whole, avoid plastic ones, and avoid ones with a lot of string and "dental" floss.

After the tarter is on the teeth, only the vet can do a dental cleaning and remove it. You can help the build up of new tarter however. THe vet clinic I work at (Banfield- usually located in PetSmart's) sells something called CET chews. They have a special enzyme on the rawhide chews that, when it mixes with the salivia, it helps break down the tarter more/better than "over the counter" treats. Otherwise, the toothbrush/toothpast method will help-- if your dog will let you..That's the main reason we hear that pet owners do not brush his/her pet's teeth.
I would think about saving up for a dental cleaning. It will lead to a healthier mouth and a life in general. Just like humans, having a clean mouth will increase their lifespan

how old is he?
if he is a puppy then brushing his teeth will be good, but if it doesnt get better then you will have to take him to a vet...
if the dog is big then you have to take him to a vet coz this stuff can be serious
humans react differently to gum diseases and dogs differently, if your mom has a gum disease which is not so serious doesnt mean that your dog is safe too...he could be suffering from some bacteria etc...if brushing his teeth helps then you should carry on brushing his teeth everyday but if it doesnt then you should take him to the vet cause it might be paining him

Raw bones are the easiest and can be thet healthiest way of cleaning dogs teeth. Ever seen a wolf use a toothbrush? Any forest fairies brushing those wolves' teeth? No, wild animals "clean" their teeth by knawing on bones. Check with your local butcher, many of them sell raw bones specifically for dogs. We have a place that sells bones for 88 cents/pound
It's a cheap and very very effective way to clean their teeth. Brushing can be very ineffective, ever tried to hold open a dog's mouth and brush those back molars?? Ha Ha. That's why the vet knocks them out beforehand!! unless you trained him from puppydom to accept brushing, you are heading for an uphill battle.
RAW (do not cook, boil, bake, heat them) bones.
Careful with chewies (I am not sure if you mean greenies) as dogs can choke on them or they can cause intestinal blockages.

dogs will resist the tooth brush and to start now may not do all that much. i would try dog biscuts they like then they are easy for them to digest and they will help in fighting gum and tooth problems. a solid rubber tooth toy is also good. raw hide chews not good for several reasons. they don't digest easy. and can get stuck in the digestive system . and they don't help in the gum area. smell the dogs breath this is agood indication of problems also. and by all means consult you vet.

how old is he? That is an important part of answering this question.
If he is young bones can help.
If he is old only a vet can help.
Brushing dog teeth is not fun. You have to have the right kind of tooth paste and do it every night just like our own.
