Without a fire extinguisher.

NOT with water.

Fire extinguishes in one of two ways - lack of fuel (or usable fuel), which is where water comes in, because it makes it unburnable, but water on grease is a major no-no - water and oil don't mix and you are asking for real problems.

The other way is lack of oxygen. Smother the fire. Baking soda, sand, apparently salt, something not easily burnable that will block oxygen and prevent fire from obtaining oxygen and fuel at the same time.

But really, you should have a fire extinguisher anyway. They don't cost much, compared to what they can protect for you.

If it occurred IN the oven, that's a pretty safe place if it was just a small inch-or-two pile of grease burning, and you could probably just close the door and let it burn itself out. If it was major flames, fireplace size, that's another story and you should really have a fire extenguisher for that.

Baking soda all the way. I had a friend who worked at McDonald's and she put water on a grease fire. Needless to say, she was fired. Good luck!

Keep the door closed and it will go out. If you open the door the oxygen will make it worse.
