IF YES, PLEASE PROVIDE EXAMPLES.

I see often that either muslim people or others say that the media is trying to make islam look bad.

here is an example from a question a few minutes ago:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsJ1uSm11BrgbTaEXja_aqHsy6IX?qid=20070629193223AA67LoW&show=7#profile-info-sJIQZ39vaa

I just want to see some examples of what you are talking about, because I think that the media is very careful to NOT do that, and has even treated muslims in general reletively better than a lot of other groups in this regard.

And please don't go waaaaay off topic, just provide examples about how the media is out to get muslims and is the one making them look bad.

MoonLit Muslima - Muslim militants. You may say it is an oxymoron and all, but the militants don’t.

Does the news have to ignore everything they say about themselves? You can’t just ignore the Islamic factor when the group’s name is “ISLAMIC JIHAD” or something. That would just be silly, how could you report on Bin Laden without mentioning what he believes….?

On the other hand, they always make the point that these people are radicals or extremists, who do not represent true islam, and they have some CAIR guy on there to back that point up.

Ela Abdul - BRAVO! first person to answer. My thing is I still do not see this as being anti-muslim, because theya re reporting facts. The fact is in Iran, women were being arrested for not wearing hijad right, that is just a fact. In general none of this seems any worst than the treatment anyone else would get.

also about the Iran artical....those women are in fact being oppressed. You may find it liberating, but they (those women in Iran do not) and they are being oppressed

The media exists to tell people what they want, not whats actually happening.

Everyone knows the media is biased. Not just with Islam, but with any issue. One example I can think of with this regards is that when a person of any other faith commits a crime, then they only mention the person's ethnicity and age (but no mention of faith). However, when a Muslim commits a crime, that person is immediately labelled as a Muslim by the media.

Haven't you also noticed how Islam is constantly mentioned in the media on a daily basis? And how the word 'Islam' is so frequently mentioned alongside the word 'terrorism'. Have you ever heard of the 'repetition means emphasis' technique employed by the media? Well, they are attempting to engrave into people's minds that Muslims are terrorists, and unfortunately with great success (because most people form their opinions based on the knowledge supplied to them by the media).

It is a little difficult to come up with examples off the top of ones head, but just to show how peoples minds are formed by the media and the lack of knowledge about Islam here are a few examples. It is not blatant attacks that the media makes but subtle things over time that filtrate into people's opinions.

Example1: I was watching The View (about 2 months ago) and somehow they got on to the subject that some Indians were suspected of being part of the 9/11 attacks. Joy says something along the lines of that "India is a Hindu country so there couldn't be any terrorists there." Which implies that since she thinks there are only Hindus and no Muslims in India there could not be any terrorists there.

Two quick points: India has the 2nd largest Muslim population in the World. Not just Muslims are terrorists. If you look at the past 70 years in India Hindus have done some terrorizing of their own.

Example 2: My husband is Muslim and works in a gas station. He is Indian so he could look like people from many different religions. A woman has trained her children to go into the gas station and steal things then run to her car so she can take off. She plans it all out so when they come inside it is busy and there are plenty of other people in the store. So on an attempt to try to catch the woman and the children my husband runs after them. Out of everything in the world the woman could say at that moment she says "hurry get in the car he is just trying to terrorize us."

Example 3: Go to bbcnews.com which is supposed to be more liberal and informed than most American news. Look for any story that is by Francis Harrison about the hijab. Listen to her chose of words and her diction. what does she emphasize in her story. Is it the liberation women feel when they wear hijab? Or is it the restrictiveness that westerners feel it imposes? Here is a link to a story she did on Iran it is not just this story but she does stories all over about Islam and the hijab among other aspects of Islam where what she is presenting is subtly attacking Islam. (notice in the link the words "hijab horror")

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/worldupdate/news/story/2007/05/070501_hijab_horror.shtml

I don't necessarily agree with the government enforcing the hijab law, but what I am trying to say is that she emphasizes that women should be dressed in black like the female police officers. I just wanted to give an example, she has many other stories on hijab that are not just cut and dry. I also wanted to say that when ever you are watching something about the violence in the middle east or in Palestine and Israel, you never hear the Israeli bombers or other Israelis that commit terrorism called terrorists or militants. NEVER. Just listen.

The media is just money hungry and will display anything to boost their ratings.

Example, not even about Islam: Paris Hilton

I don't understand why 20 minutes of air time are dedicated to an unimportant person.

Example: Turn on your T.V, watch an hour of news and see if you can watch it without hearing the words "militant Islam", that is an oxymoron, since Islam also means peace.

That's not Islam they are showing, that's people who think they are Muslim and think they are doing the right thing. That's people making wrong choices.. NOT ISLAM

2007-06-29 23:26:55 · answer #4 · answered by ۩MoonLit Muslima۩ 5 · 1 1

There's no such thing as an independent media or independent anything. Even the government is not independent!!!! They all work for a certain party and for a certain agenda.

Right now, the vast majority of muslims are pretty weak. Their leaders have been killed by dictators supported by the west and their land occupied by foreign armies. So real Islam has no mouthpiece and the western media will take advantage of this.

Watch different news channels for the headlines consecutively for further proof (fox news vs. cnn vs al jazeera vs bbc).

Everyone has bias, whether you like to believe it or not.

Islam getting slammed....WHERE?
Not in DC, not by the liberal media and the talking heads.

Sheesh the liberal mainstream media slam dances on our military without a thought. My son just returned from Iraq and he said it really shocked him to see NBC/ABC/CNN/CBS reports about the people of Iraq and how they hate the Americans and spit on the Americans, when that is the furtherest thing from the truth for the normal Iraqi people who adore the US Military and what they had done to free, protect, and defend the people.

Now the terrorists are another matter, but then the terrorist factions do not care about their own life, much less anyone else...Everyone is expendable and worthless to them.

Those pockets of dead-hearted insane people are NOT Iraq, maybe not some of Islamics, but the terrorists we are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq for the most part they are not even Afghans nor Iraqis but foreigners.

But idiots in Washington and the talking heads on TV look into the cameras and lie about our honorable military, without a thought for the mamas and daddies and families of those in military who are bleeding and dying so that they can sit their fat butts safely in this country and whine and lie.

The only Islamic person I know is Walid Shoebat, he is a Palestinian born in Jerusalem, and he was reared and trained to be a Jihadist terrorist for Islam. He says he willingly killed Israelis and allies of Israel without a thought and a care. He says Islam's ONLY goal is the total destruction of America and Israel and anyone who supports the USA and Israel.

Christianity looks bad when pseudo Christians bomb clinics and rip off the public with television scams.

Muslims look bad when some Muslims choose to blow up buildings and civilians in a market place.

I don't think the media is a friend of either religion. Why do we give them ammunition to use?

The media is anti-christian.That is why allot of the nation has started hating Christians. For the most part they cover the few bad things that happen and ignore the multitudes of good things Christians do.

or "Yes" for the dummiez on thiz site. No need for examplez. U can give one ur self really.

Just keep looking at TV and hearing the most important topic in America iz looking at non-Jesus worshiperz causing mayhem. Making kidz (11-18) seem more ignorant too.

I am around the silly Hood steroytypez myself and I hate half of the jokez but I alwayz shake it off. (real easy)

but az far az being viewed az a terrorist I just will be that and more because u don't know SH** about me.

So if u (EVERYONE) HATE Muslims just because ur too stupid to break bread with them and know every single onez personality, Well take ur self out if ur that scared.

i think its the opposite.

They show the clip, and then they talk something like this

"of course, these are the extreme islamofascists, now let me introduce my guest, dr. bill"

dr.bill-"yes these are the extreme of extremeists, not regular muslims"

the third, unintroduced speaker-"islamofasicsts is a scare tactic, these people aren't fasicsts any more than Hitler was a communist."

dr. bill and anchor-"shut up, these are extremely extreme islamofascists of the extreme order"
----------------------------------------------------------------------

what's funny is that i didnt make this up, I saw this on tv, with mostly the same dialouge. (the third speaker was closest to what actually was said)

this isn't waaaaay off topic, just waaay of topic

The media can be anti-anything, even anti-media sometimes.

It just depends on what the topic is and if it can catch people's attention.

And yes, it'll do anything sometimes to catch people's attention.

Peace.
