I know I am supposed to only eat 20 net carbs a day. But I eat allot of protein and I read somewhere that I have to limit my protein too in order to get into ketosis. Do you know how many grams of protein I am supossed to consume to get into ketosis?

you need to determine how much lean body mass you have and consume 1 gram of protein per lb of LBM. the rest of the calories will be derived from fats.

first you need to find an online calculator that can determine your body fat %. then once you have that number follow the example below:

150 lbs - 20% = 120

roughly 120 lbs of fat free mass. each meal would be close to 24 grams of protein if 5 meals are consumed

* check local drugstores to see if you can purchase some Ketostix to measure the levels of ketones

Why would you want to do that/ It's not healthy and there are better ways to lose weight.

"Low carb diets can cause your body to go into a dangerous metabolic state called ketosis since your body burns fat instead of glucose for energy. During ketosis, the body forms substances known as ketones, which can cause organs to fail and result in gout, kidney stones, or kidney failure. Ketones can also dull a person's appetite, cause nausea and bad breath. Ketosis can be prevented by eating at least 100 grams of carbohydrates a day."

I have researched and researched and researched and then I finally did it myself. I have learned through research and practice that ketosis ( better known as lipolysis ) is good for you. UNLESS, you are type 1 diabetic, you are just burning up a lot of fats which causes the production of ketones. These ketones become so numerous that they can be measured, hence the term, ketosis.

Now for a type 1 diabetic, ketosis can become poisonsous because they are just overproducing way too many ketones due to completely inactive insulin levels. This will then become ketoacidosis, NOT to be confused with ketosis.

Ketones are always being produced in our bodies. This rate increases when insulin levels and glucagon levels are balanced. Stability of both hormones require a low consumption of glucose which comes in the form of sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes in otherwords...carbs. The body needs absolutely non of these and it will survive just fine. There are many cultures that practice a traditionally low carb diet who consume a high amount of proteins and fats while keeping their carbs at a traditionally low level. They can brag about their mighty bone mass, immunity factors and strong healthy teeth. Eat your protein. Have some at every meal along with fats. Upgrade your fruit and vegetable supplies and stop giving oranges and apples undeserved glory. Isn't it interesting that the Inuit Indians do not experience scurvy?. Yet, they eat no oranges. Keep your carb count down to 30 grams and you will succeed in entering into ketosis. Eat a variety of meats including<<< yuck>>> liver. Include things like avocadoes and bell peppers in your diet. WIll this hurt your liver? Does your liver work properly, then all ketosis will do is stimulat the liver into doing its job. Same goes for the kidneys. You won't go blind and the boogey man won't get you. Just keep your carb load under thirty but no less than 20 grams and eat well.

It is all about the yin and yang of insulin and glucagon balance.

It is my understanding that low carbs will get you to Ketosis. But, do beware. Some doctors tell you that ketosis will harm your kidneys. Other doctors, like the late Dr. Atkins, say that there is not a problem doing so.
