I have seen this with DVT's (deep vein thrombosis) or blood clot, diabetics with poor circulation, arthritis....but it could be very dangerous and even fatal. Don't move too much and go to the ER immediately

You must have something wrong with either the circulation or the joint of the knee is diseased. Arthritis will cause swelling from the knee down. I have had the problem several times.

Blood clots cause leg swelling like that. It can be a serious thing. If you haven't already, I suggest going to the doctor.

You could have clots in that knee blocking blood flow, thus causing the blood to be squeezed into the surrounding tissues.

There could be a few reasons. Is there pain in your calf? It could be a blood clot. If there is pain, especially when you flex your foot, go to the ER tonight.

It could be for many different reasons, but one of them, a deep vein thrombosis, can be potentially fatal, so please see your doctor immediately.
