I think it would be helpful if there were some way to have a meeting with everyone in the office with your friend out to lunch with you, maybe. You could ask the boss to ask everyone if they want to offer support, they should just wait until she brings it up to them. Also, the boss could tell them not to ask questions, she should not be obligated to keep everyone informed. If she brings it up, all they need to do is listen and ask her if there is anything they can do for her. Otherwise, it shouldn't even come up as office discussion material...She doesn't need to come down the hall and overhear others discussing it. You can be of service by keeping those who are sincerely concerned informed of any changes in the situation. And, consequently, I will be keeping her in my prayers.....God Bless, Peace.

Oh man... I feel for her. My best friend was murdered almost six years ago (and no, they haven't caught anyone yet). People can be SO insentsitve! (I have unleashed furor on stupid and ignornant people at times - tell your coworker it's okay if she snaps at these people every now and then.)
My standard answer has become: "When there's good news, I'll be shouting it from the rooftops!" I think my best friend's parents say something similar.
As far as you go, be supportive to her. Listen when she needs someone, offer a shoulder when she breaks down, and try to run interference with the idiots who reappear. =) (You can also speak to some of the offenders one on one and tell them they're upsetting your coworker and how 'bout they back off? Or mention it to your supervisor.)

I don't have a good response for that - interestingly, when my mom in law was dying of cancer, people didn't ack my spouse how she was doing, but instead asked his best work friend. The friend got so annoyed with it he finally started telling them "go ask him - it's not like he's the one who died!"
I wouldn't be nice, myself, in her situation. I would finally just tell people to mind their own damn business.
How about YOU going to your supervisor about it? You're obviously aware of how much it's upsetting her; you could help resolve the situation. You know she might not go to the supervisor, because she likely just wishes they'd all blow away and die at this point, and she's just not in the mindset to want to deal with it in any way.

She could say "sorry, but I would rather not talk about it".
I know these people mean good but i see her point too. it is a fine line to walk for all concerned.
