Nope... I think, as apparently you do... that it's an act of desperation... or maybe futility That's the suicide's problem. He, or she is tired of trying. Whether they're trying to succeed, to gain something, to get rid of something... nothing has worked. I don't think the suicide expects to achieve whatever it is they're striving for as a result of taking his or her own life. I would guess not. All they want is to get stop the futility.
I suppose to those left behind, it's selfish. But that's their problem. They can get over it, or they can let it fester inside them. They can remember the good the deceased did, or they can bash him or her for his or her last act. Talk about selfish.
Death is a natural part of a mortal life... That's what 'mortal' means.

Selfish? Well, you Are leaving people to Morn you, without troubling Yourself.
Actually, it's a Cowardly act, being Afraid to Face Life. "Tried Everything" is Doubtful, since Suicide is Easy compared with Finding Solutions. There NEVER is an "Only Way", there are Always Options.
As to "Knowing what's Best", I doubt That! End of Hell....and Pleasure, and Happiness...Choose that Path and you'd Never Know what's coming up. Hell is a State of Mind....What makes up Hell?
Boy/Girlfriend Left....They weren't Much then, were they?
No Job.....Get one, might not be Great, but More come up next week
No Money....get Job
Drugs....go to a Rehab Clinic
Pain...get Drugs....I mean the RX ones
Have I thought of It....Darn Straight! Things looked Bad for a while.
BUT If I had...would I be in this Nice House, on a Computer....giving Advice on Living? What about all the Lives I've Touched since then?
Anyone Thinking about it....How about Joining me in a Nice Field near here to Enjoy another day?

Suicide is usually a result of symptoms. The root cause of the symptoms is usually Depression. This is not a cure for the cause and only cause grief and depression for those around the person. So, should they also commit suicide and cause more grief and depression for others around them?
If no one knows what is going on inside the person's mind, then it is usually because the person has "withdrawn" and does not allow others into to their life. If "life is hell," then the reason for that "hell" needs to be identified. Only then, will they be able to overcome the problem.
When a person is in such a deep depression, they usually have a very low cognizance of relativity and are not in control of their life. Therefore, they do not know what is best for anyone, much less themselves.
Those that claimed that they have "tried everything" have only "quit trying." Unless they have succeeded in coping with the stresses that life brings to all of us, they have not tried everything. It is a defeatist attitude and only brings pain and suffering to others, although the depressed person may not see it because they are too wrapped up in their own problems and don't think about others around them. THAT IS THE SELFISH PART.

this is a personal question that can only be answered by the person doing the act. For most , they are depressed which is defined by
Depression: An illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts, that affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be wished away. People with a depressive disease cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people with depression.
the person can not think clearly and thus makes rash decisions. the common decision being im in pain, and nothing can be worse although they dont realize that by taking ur life ur not actually reliving the pain only in theory prolonging it and the only way to remove the pain is to get help. So if they are depressed or have other mental disorders than i dont believe it is selfishness because selfishness is "a primary or sole concern with one's own welfare" and since they dont seek help, are too afraid, or dont know better than they arent solely concerned with their own health.
So to conclude, a depressed person who committs suicide isnt selfish because he isnt think about his life, thus he cant be selfish.
anyone who committs suicide thinks there no way out, and it cant get worse, while with help from a professional and can get better. its a serious illness that needs to be treated

Yes, I think that it is a very selfish act and very ugly to leave all those that love and loved you behind wondering why they did not see the signs that you were suicidal in the first place. There is always someone somewhere that is suffering more so than you are. It is the chicken **** way out and it leaves those that knew the person so many hurtful self blaming feelings to for the rest of their life to deal with. So please if you are someone that you know is acting sad or considering this route please reach out for help, any kind of help, from any source. There are those that can help hot lines and people to talk to so that you can fix the problem that you are having. God Bless and remember there is more reasons to live than not live. You can find these reasons to live if you just think positive instead of the bad. Also remember that what is hurting you now will hurt a little less if you know that with time the pain will lessen and it will not hurt as bad.

I kinda think it is a selfish act. When you commit suicide, no matter what the situation is, the person isnt thinking of how others around them are going to be affected by it. (like if they have a spouse or children) Most people who are in that situation don't see the bigger picture and see that things WILL get better. Even if they have a terminal illness, we are all here for a reason. Life to them only seems like it is bad. Even rich people and popular people commit suicide. I agree with you when you say it is their choice and it should be. Im not trying to sound contradictive here I am against suicide I dont want to rob people of making the choice for themselves.

i think some suicides are selfish and some are not. i had a good friend commit suicide and i was very sad but never mad. and if any church people tell me that he went to hell that will piss me off. he was a good person. i think sometimes that it is a real hectic world we live in, if you are lucky someone will help you and let you know they care and life is worth living. if you are not lucky you can get doors slammed in your face and people are so busy with their own life it seems that no one will stop to take the time to help you. we as a society have to change and be more caring and more generous and i think if we do there will be less people killing themselves. i spend most of my time doing things i enjoy and i should try to give some of my time in helping others but i don't so i am just as guilty as anyone

Time heals all wounds and yes it is very selfish. Most don't think about the other's that are affected by this act. Suicide is a permanent soulution to a temporary problem. Its a no win situation. I'm sorry to have to disagree with you but things can always be worked out and to know what's going on in there mind you only need to be there and show them love and understanding. There not alone, and they need to be accepted and not rejected.

Right. That may be easy for you to say if you have never had a loved one to take their life. In essence, it is selfish because the person is not thinking about the heartbreak they are leaving behind. How would you like to find your mother hanging from the drapery valance by a drape? Or find your mother lying in every drop of blood that has drained out of her body from a gaping gunshot wound to the head? That happened to two different people I know, and family and
friends were devastated.
Most of us have thoughts of suicide at one time or another. It is your choice how you will act upon the thoughts.

Hmm...well, I feel terrribly for the person who suffers from depression to the point he/she feels suicide is the only answer. I think that the person is in such pain at the time that they can only think of themself in a way, but in the end...it is a selfish act because who is left suffering? All of the people who loved that person...and the guilt is horrible. If only I had said this...if only I had done that. So, my opinion is....yes it's selfish, but it's hard to blame the ones who have committed suicide because they aren't thinking rationally at the time anyway. Just my two cents.

Well think of this. One of the few survivors who jumped off the Golden Gate bridge said that as soon as his feet left the bridge he realized that this was the stupidest thing he ever did.
Now he sees his life and realizes it would have been very selfish for him to kill himself. He's now a woodworking teacher. He wonders who would have taught all his students how to work with wood. Who would have walked his daughter down the aisle.
Also what about the people who are going to be in hell now that the person is dead.
