"freethinkers?" and always with quotes but not the question mark. Do not want to offend any atheists who are not freethinkers (is that possible?) or vice-versa

How can you define someone as a "freethinker" when they have a closed mind on a subject ? Any subject ? I'm happy to admit that in an infinite universe, however unlikely, there is a possibility (possibility) that somewhere there is an actual ugly looking, wheat based lifeform that can fly. How could I say for sure that there isn't ?

It's just another term. I think "freethinker" refers to atheists and agnostics so some people prefer that term.

Freethinker is a good term.

Although it sound complimentary, in some ways it is not. There are some people that are so deep into atheism they wil not accept the hypothetical, most will but I have seen some that are not free thinking. So refer to most as but not all.

Do people really need more labels?

Is it possible that one can be not believe in deity but not subscribe to the philosophy of freethought? Yes, of course. I don't forsee anybody getting offended over it, but I think you should use each term in the proper context. Don't use one when you mean the other.

Fine by me. I think there are other people who think freely who do believe in a higher power, though. As an atheist I don't mind... just be aware that that term is not specific to atheists.

Yes. How do you propose to refer to agnostics?

I am a Christian, but I am a free thinker...and they might be offended whenever you talk abotu them like that, as if it's a code name. Just say atheist.
