Cats, dogs, etc. If you talk about eating a dog, people gross out. In Ecuador, they eat fried guinia pig for crying out loud! Why we do that? I aim to get to the bottom of this.

Who says it is socially unacceptable?

Dog tastes pretty good. So do cat ribs - they yaste like pork. By now, everyone is probably freaking out. But, how many times have you eaten in an Oriental restaurant that is a short hop from a vet? Do you really know what you are eating?

Yes, I have eaten dog, cat, snake, frog, pig, cow, buffalo, aligator, pigeon, rat, ants, grasshoppers, assorted other bugs, worms, grubs, small woodland creatures, duck, pheasant, geese, robin's eggs, and a few other things. Why, because I was hungry, and I didn't have a market to go to. Would I do it again. Hmmm, let's see. Eat something a bit different or starve? Well, I am here answering your question, so.....

When u get a pet & care 4 it, u consider it as a friend. People like to hang out with their pets as buddies and talk, because u know that the animal will not tell anyone. Once you see how great your/someone's pet is/was, you generalize and say that all dogs, cats, etc (whatever the case may be,) are loving and great and friendly. Imagine eating ur best friend, cannabalism to the worst extent. That of course is horrible right? Since ur pet is your friend, eating it will be like eating your friend. If you see anyone with a horse as a pet and friend, you begin to think eating horse is bad. however, not many people have pet friends that are cows, turkey, and chicken, therefore it is ok to eat them. In Ecuador, however, not many people have guinea pigs as pets. So, they do not love them as a friend and they then find it acceptable to eat it. 9For the same reason we eat chicken.) I have 2 guinea pigs, and find it revolting to eat them. However, my mom's friend from work is from south america, and keeps asking the wierdest and grossest questions about them.
So, all in all it depends on your culture, mind, and logic. Case - CLOSED

Well what someone thinks of as a cute pet in America (say, an adorable kitten) can be a wonderful appetizer halfway around the world. It's a lot of factors, including culture and what kinds of animals are available to eat.

I'm Filipino, and whenever I explain to someone in America what a balut (hardboiled fertilized duck egg with a nearly fully-formed embryo inside) is, they gross out.

Because we Americans treat our pets as if they were human, and spend thousands of dollars keeping them licensed, meeting the requirements of that license and keeping healthy.
A friend just spent big bucks treating her 16 year old cat for a blood clot in it's leg. Another friend spent bigger bucks on urinary surgery for her cat.
Having a pet is like having an investment. Except this investment pays off in love, not dollars.

it is all about teaching the young. in most cultures of the world the same practice of learning to love and care for a pet is a good way to teach children about compassion and responsibility. it is the the humane thing to do and it is very important to move beyond savage and brutal behavior on toward a higher civilization. in "lord of the flies" the author provides a great example of this subject. read it. learn about the advantages of compassion and love over savage dog-eat-dog culture. it is worth your time if you really are asking such a question in earnest.

Well, of course it is unacceptable to eat your friends.
Not only that, while we're on the subject of proper etiquette, it is not considered good manners to eat other people's friends, either.
I don't know how they do things in Ecuador, but here, if you eat someone's guinea pig, not only will you not be invited back...but you could find yourself in jail.

Because you are supposed to love and care for your pets. Most people I know with dogs and pets consider them family... it would be pretty horrible to eat a family member... no?
