I know China has the largest armed forces in the world, but I have had trouble finding information on other countries and the amounts of soldiers that they maintain.

Of course, size doesn't equal effectiveness - though the US and South korean forces would be the highest quality. North Korea would certainly have the lowest quality forces among on the list - barely a quarter would be at all effective other than as human fodder. The force size reflects the places the regions most of them occupy - Vietnam has been invaded by China, so would feel the need for a large force on that count; Turkey has a border with Iraq and Syria; South Korea faces the North Korean army, and so on. The US force structure is built to stabilise the globe (you can argue about whether it does this, but this is the reason for its size).

The question being answered I will add that without air power an Army is nothing.
The US has 12 Carrier Battle Groups that take the fight to the others guys porch. Just the way it is intended.
Add the reach of our Air Force.
Force size does not matter unless it's Normandy and 1944!

i agree.u should look at the per kapita.china need a large number of army coz there are at least 2billions chinese.
what most important is that they don't invade other countries.their large army is important during the annual flooding of yangtze river,earthquake and etc and not for invading countries.furthermore their military spending still cannot surpass US and i figure out that US is very keen in inventing new machines to kill people
