I have a dog with the same problem and what I do is that I make sure he is never too bored. It sounds like you may not give him enough excercise so if you dont, take him on more walks, give him some toys to play with, run around with him etc. Just make sure he isnt too bored to the point where he will just bark at anything because when my dog is bored he barks at anything, even leaves falling in front of him. Also, if he does bark, say NO in an assertive tone and make him sit. Everytime he barks, even once, keep saying NO and making him sit. Eventually he should stop. Do this EVERY SINGLE TIME he barks.

Continue the the "no" but make sure you are saying it loud and firm. You can also pair it with a quick, sharp correction on the choke chain. Do not use shock collars as the dog can become accustomed to the shock and and sometimes it can even cause slight nerve damage. The choke chain correction teaches that the command comes from you. It can take several weeks or months for dogs to catch on. Keep in mind there are no quick fixes and anyone quick fix method that people tell you will probably cause another problem that you will have to deal with. If he is just barking for attention ignore him. He will favor any attention over non but if ignored he will eventually stop. Only give him attention when he is being good.

There are special anti-bark collars you could try. They give the dog a shock if he barks. I am not a fan of them and would never use one on my little dogs but some people claim to have had success with them.
I have one here that barks and I have tried for years to get him shut up - all to no avail. Still, he is greatly loved - big mouth and all - and I've learned to live with it. However, I live in a fairly rural area and have a big yard. I can appreciate that the barking would be a much bigger problem if you live in a congested area.
If he barks in his crate in the house, ignore him. He will stop after awhile. You don't mention what breed he is but he is still a puppy so keep that in mind before resorting to something like a bark collar. He may just want some attention. If you ignore him when he barks, he will learn that it does him no good and he may give up. You might also want to enroll the two of you in obedience classes. Good luck with him!

Dogs usually bark when they are bored, in pain, sense danger or just wanna be loved. Find out why he's barking. He may be barking at a bug on the floor. Or he might see a female.

Before I used a bark collar I would try one that emits a citronella spray mist when the dog barks. They hate the smell (it's not bad to us) and citronella is actually a good insect repellent so you'd be killing two birds with one stone.

whats he barking at? noise? people walking by? seperation anxiety..doesnt like to be alone? it depends. my advise, hitting the dog will make him continue barking and will later on aggrivate him to where he can snap back or take it out on someone/something else. i dont know how much money you want to spend, but if you can spare $100, get a citronella collar. everytime he barks, he will get sprayed with citronella spray. it is harmless for them, but they HATE the smell. it taught my dog to stop barking immediately.

Try a citronella collar. It is more humane than a shock collar in my opinion. I prefer to not use force when I train my animals.

Get a spray bottle. Fill it with plain water and give him a few squirts everytime he misbehaves.
