I have seen many western movies. Many cowboys make marks on the arses of horses.

What is the official name of the mark?

And what about the tool, which looks like a hot pontil?

Do the horses feel painful?

Yes, the other answerer's are right, it is indeed a brand. The technique has been around since humans first began agriculture and other humans decided to steal the neighbors cattle. And it is pertinent to ask this question here in the religion section because some organizations around the world are thinking of branding people to identify to what religion they belong and also apply a scale of 1 to 10 to indicate precisely how easily they can be manipulated by religious doctrine.

How this applies to Religion and Spirituality, I'll never know. But the mark is called a brand, made with a branding iron, and if someone stuck you in the *** with a hot poker it would certainly hurt--I'm sure the horse feels the same way.

It's a bran.....Ranchers normally put the symbol or letters of their Ranch. The tool I'm not sure what it's called but they stick it in fire so it will leave a permenant mark on the horse. Yes the horses will have pain for a moment but not too long. My horses back in Nashville have brans as well.

The official name of the mark is a "brand", which is usually identifies who the owner of the horses or cattle is.

The hot iron that makes the "brand" is called a "branding iron", and is made by the one doing the branding.

Yes, it hurts really badly. That's why they make noises and kick and thrash around.

It's called a branding iron, and yes, it probably hurts.

However, most ranches now use freeze branding by using a coolant which causes the pigment of the hair on the horses hide to turn white.

The brand is the mark of the ranch that owns the animal.

It's called a brand... it's so their true owner can be identified in case they get stolen. The tool is called a branding iron, and the livestock do feel pain, but horses have thicker skin than humans...

It's a brand. It's a symbol That shows who the horse belongs to. They are burned in the flesh so I would say they do hurt when done.

It's called a brand.
The tool is a branding iron.
I would imagine it hurts like hell, but our vet said that the intense heat of the branding iron usually anesthetizes the area, and the animals don't feel that much discomfort.
