God had told them not to touch the tree of knowledge.

And the Bible doesn't say they "didn't know right from wrong" it says they were innocent. There's a difference.

It was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; not the tree of the knowledge of right and wrong or the knowledge of hot and cold or night and day.

Back to the drawing board to figure out what the knowledge of good and evil really is. They lost their innocence. They always had the ability to follow God's direction.

Once they did lose their innocence, the ability to follow God's direction started to fall too. Until we reach today where many don't know what is right and wrong and won't listen to or take direction from any authority.

Though Adam and Eve lacked knowledge of good and evil before eating from the tree, that doesn't necessarily mean they had no understanding of obedience and disobedience, or that they were totally ignorant of right and wrong - any more than the presence of the tree of life meant they were dead until they ate from it.

There were told so. Or at least told Adam. But Eve knew because she repeated it to the serpent.

It was disobedient, but the serpent was making a good point (and told the truth), so not knowing what was really "right" or "wrong" at that point, Eve went for the fruit.

I still don't understand why the serpent is considered the antagonist. The story gives absolutely no motive for the serpent.

God told them.

Genesis 2

15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

Eve asked about the tree, and why it was glistening.

God told them that they must never eat from the tree, because it was bad for them.

The story of Adam and Eve is a myth to show us what happens when we freely choose to disobey God.
