You can't make an appointment at a passport office unless you are traveling within 10 days. You can't visit a passport office unless you have an appointment, you will just be turned away. However if you are traveling that soon, make the call to the passport office and you can get one the same day.

Otherwise you can visit your nearest post office that does passports, have one expedited and you will get in between 2-4 weeks. Normally I would just say 4 weeks, but I just got one for my son this way in 2 weeks. Needless to say you should expect it in 4 weeks.

If you happen to be in no-mans land, that area between 4 weeks and 10 days all you can do is just wait until you can make an appointment. When you show up at the passport office expect a 2-4 hour wait. Yes you will have an appointment, but remember everyone else has one too.

get an appointment at a passport center, bring your proof of imminent departure plus the other items needed for a regular passport application (form, photos, money, proof of citizenship and proof of identity). contact the passport center by e-mail (npic@state.gov) or phone (877-487-2778) if you have further questions.

Make an appointment at one of the PP offices. It is not cheap, but it is quicker.
