I'm trying to choose between Paris and Rome, I'm wanting to study art there for a semester, probably next spring. I have always wanted to see both places. I love the culture of those places. My ancestry is French, but I've been wanting to see Rome as well because that's where some of the events in the Bible took place. I'm open to any honest opinion, with your reason given. Thanks!

While I appreciate your answers, my choice is between Paris and Rome. I'm not looking for suggestions to travelling somewhere else. Thanks!

I personally say Rome, it is more relaxed and has amazing art. Both places are great for architecture, art history, and religion. Rome seems to be more relaxed, and they like tourist and each other more. Good luck, neither place is a bad choice. LUVS!

I have spent a considerable amount of time in both cities and I think Rome is better, no question. The people are MUCH nicer, the food is better, the public transportation is much easier, the prices are cheaper, and the general attitude of the city is so much more alive and vibrant. Paris is nice, the Eiffel tower is pretty, but that's about it. The people have no energy, no zest for life. Paris is a lot of grey and honking cars. Rome is honking cars, but it's old men hanging out of taxis, kids zooming around on Vespas, old ladies arguing over whose bolognese sauce is better, fashionistas on their cell phones, lovers on park benches, soccer games on every TV, etc. You can fly to Paris on ryanair.com or easyjet.com for dirt cheap (2 weeks purchase time) or take an InterCity train (overnight is maybe $80) and wake up in Paris in the morning. My suggestion would be (if you must go to Paris) to take local trains north from Rome, go through Genoa (where Christopher Columbus was based), through the Italian Riveria (Liguria) and into France. Hang out on the French Riveria for a couple days, Monaco, Nice, Cannes, etc. Then take a train from the south of France up to Paris for a few days. Take 3 days or so for the Louvre if you're big into art, then another day for the Orsay, and maybe a few other places if you're really into that. It's very easy to travel by train in Italy and France- most stations have automated ticket machines that are in English so don't worry if you don't speak the language (plus everyone really *does* speak some English). Good luck and have some lasagna for me!

They're are both awesome places for art, and it's a hard choice.
I vote for Rome because you can see a lot of statues and work from those first centuries AD, go to Florence, Naples, Ercolano, Ravenna, Pompeii, Paestum, Bologna, Venice, and it's warmer.

If I had to choose where to live, I might pick Paris, but to study art for a semester, I'd go for Italy.
You can always go up to France on a night train, and wake up, you're there.
Check into flights that have you flying to Italy and returning from Paris, so you can take a train up to Paris and spend a week or a few days before you leave.
I like expedia.com and travelocity.com
for those mixed tickets.

I would visit Rome since it is such an important city in terms of European heritage and history, but I would not mind visiting Paris either, which is also famous for its art museums.

I think since you will study art, you might as well go to Rome, where you can see classical art and architecture.
