I got "the talk" at that age because I asked questions about babies. I knew where they came from but I was testing my parents to double check if they would tell me the truth.
You should be honest with him. You don't need to give him the complete and total talk but you shouldn't lie. One day he'll find out and could be upset you lied to him.
Would you rather him find out the wrong way from friend who will fill his head with silly things. He should be educated enough to know about his body and its functions , but not too much.
It's your choice what's too much by the way

Why are you dodging this question? It is the male's reaction to really having to go to the bathroom, too. My son was 3 years-old when he asked. I actually told him that girls don't have the same kind of wee wee so we'll go ask Dad. (Honestly, I didn't know for sure, since it was just girls in my house growing up.) Dad told him straight that he had to go to the bathroom when he woke up, and his wee-wee stands up because the blood in your body is flowing stronger now, versus when you are asleep Note to self- in the future, don't avoid the question, it will only make the child feel like he has been wrong in asking a question.
Remember the cheesy quote from school: The only bad question in the one not asked? That is true. Would you rather the child ask his parents, or someone else. Answer his questions promptly or he will start asking them elsewhere!

Well, first of all, remove that shame you obviously feel about it...it isn't about sex, at age five! And by your avoidance of his question, he is going to think something is wrong...Relax! It's just that it has to do with either blood flow during the night or the need to unrinate, not exactly sure which but the latter wouldn't be hard for him to understand...sounds like you are freaking out because you think now all of a sudden you have to give him the "sex" talk...lol Breathe! Breathe! lol
I have a 6 yr old son, he asked me the same question not too long ago...he was just curious, like little boys are...their body parts are doing things, and they want to know why...it's normal and natural and not at all about sex...

Just tell him that it happens when he has to pee. Explain that it is a way for him to know when it is time to go to the potty. Don't go into to much detail at this age they just want an answer. Let him know that it happens to all boys including daddy.

Here's what we told my son (who also asked why it "jumped up and said BOO!")
Boy's penises get hard sometimes, they just get full and sometimes you need to pee when that happens, sometimes not. It happens in the morning sometimes. It will go back down- it's just the way boys are made.
Have his dad tell him the same thing happens to him.
That was all we needed to tell him at this point. Start there.

Give him the technical details. It's full of blood and stands up, but it will go back down, no big deal.

I told my sons when they were little "It does that sometimes." That was enough for them. At that age they just need assurance that nothing is wrong.

If you are not ready to give him "the real talk" then just tell him for now that it does that when it gets full of peepee...A child this age does not need the full explanation becuase he prob will not comprehend it...

just tell him that his wee wee gets that way when he needs to go pee and that it is a way of letting him know that he needs to empty his bladder.
