I am toying with the idea of moving to Europe, perhaps the UK or France, and am wondering if they accept immigrants. I work in the healthfield, so would be willing and able to work. How does one go about legally moving overseas?

A good book to get would be Culture Shock (France) it gives you an overview of if what you can expect in that country and the different qualifications of immigration and visas. I know France gives amnesty for Americans who don't want to live in a country that goes to war all the time. (you might be able to do it that way) but will be required to give up your American citizenship. or go there to study a course. But all in all it's much better to read a book

It's very difficult. I believe the easiest way is to find a company in the states that is willing to send you overseas. Otherwise they won't accept you unless you offer a skill that they can't fill with someone in the EU. So if you happen to be a world-class neurosurgeon, then you're in luck. If you're a regular ol' physician or nurse or something, probably not. They don't need any more people, and they're pretty picky about to whom they give residency. Oh, and they don't really like Americans in case you hadn't noticed. Sorry for the bad news, but keep your head up: It's not impossible.

Good luck!

Not 100% sure, but here's a vague idea:
You have to get a work visa from one of those countries. You need to have the visa signed by an employer (I believe) and you have to get it renewed every so often. Depending on the country you may or may not be able to get citizenship after a certain amount of time, but you WILL be able to live and work legally there for as long as you want.

since you cant just walk across the border you have to apply for citizenship from an embassy in your home country. If you have the qualifications they want they may or may not grant you a visa to come work in the country. If you have a parent or grand parent born in the UK you can apply for a foreign birth registry citizenship.

Contact the UK and French Embassies / consulates. They'll have the most accurate and current info.

Nothing to it.

All the US requires (assuming you want to keep citizenship) is that you pay taxes. Go and get yourself a job. But you also will pay taxes to that county too.

Among all nations, only the U.S. taxes its citizens working in foreign countries.

Of course. There is no reason why you would not be able to become a citizen of another country, especially one in Europe. Hope this helps!
