Downtown Los Angeles is nothing like San Francisco. However depending on the loft project that you reside in and its location will more or less determine the safety factor. Downtown Los Angeles gets fairly deserted at night. Some areas near skid row are definitely less than safe. However there are several loft complexes in some very safe areas. Definitely you won't get that same feeling of being in SF - say around Union Square as compared to when you are around Pershing Square in Los Angeles. Things sort of shut down at night in Los Angeles save the days when there are major events at Staples Center, big conventions and maybe the LA Marathon. I'd suggest Santa Monica or West LA.

Some homeless people are that way due to circumstance. Others are mentally ill. Some just don't know any other way. It's sad, really. No matter their situation, they're still people.
I don't ever give them any money. I donate money to charitable organizations that help them, but never to them directly. For the most part, we have a peaceful exclusionary coexistance. One time years ago, however, one of them stepped over the line with me. I basically told him NO in a manner that should have told him to back off. Instead, he got in my face and started mouthing off. I was on my way to work, so I started to take off my shirt and tie. He saw what I was doing, and quickly apologized, adding that he wasn't doing drugs or anything. (Not that I even believed him).
Just another reason to avoid downtown.

something interesting, thousands of homeless live within a 1 mile circle of the LAPD metro station in downtown..to get into the police station you have to zig zag your way pass the homeless, ive been through there a lot, and it is a weird place

I see them constantly and I believe that some, not all, are probably trying to make extra cash by dressing like a bum and begging for money, even if they can make it on their own.

Interesting I live in LA. I don't run into bums with boom box radios...yes, they ask for money, and sometimes dance and/or sing...that's about it.

Bums are dangerous. The homeless are mostly druggies and alcoholics...mentally ill are usually obvious...........
dont mess with them, its a no win situation
I feel badly for bums as I would for any human, but..................99 times out of a hundred........if you give them money, it will go for booze or drugs or cigarettes...
lots of places give free meals to the homeless...........
say no to bums and bumettes
although I must say the most entertaining bum I met had an old patched up accordian and he painstaking squeezed out a tune that was really hard to figure out....but once you did, it was marvelous .........
took him 6 minutes to find the right (or similiar) notes, and the wheezing of the leaky bellows was also a charm. life for him glowed that day.........just because..........I laid a 20 on him out of respect....he was tring to EARN his booze money...........by the way it was the theme song for Flintstones....

its like asking for world peace and ending world hunger. its possible but are you willing to sacrifice your share to make this happen? ask yourself. like bringing your own bag when you shop around, this reduces your daily impact and carbon imprint. you just saved 10 starving kids.
