i wonder if anyone can help. i live with my son and my mother in England, all British citizens, but we're considering a move to Ireland. However, my mother is disabled and would be unable to work, and I was just wondering about whether or not she would be entitled to any state support, ie benefits? i doubt it, but if anyone could help id appreciate it. Thanks

All the above answers are correct.
Please pay no attention to the Gobshites above who Wrongly corrected you in regards to irelands name. You were right to say Eire. Irelands official name is Eire,- for those who doubt, Read the constitution. "bunrath na hEireann".
I cant believe that muppets exist and dont know our own country is called Eire or Eireann, when its wrote on every coin and stamp in the country.
You should be taken out and shot, for correcting this person who was right in the first place.
The first offical name of ireland is Eire, Eireann,
as irish is the official first language of the country as enshrined in the constitution.
Republic of ireland is the second term for ireland.
You should have no trouble fitting in here as you are already ahead of some of the natives.
Donegal is great was there on saturday. However the services for the disabled can be sparse if you live in a sparsly populated area,
good luck and Ceid mile Failte

You should check out the Irish disability site if you get the address and send an email they'll get back to you giving you info on what her entitlements would be.
http://www.eypd2003.ie/eypdlinks.nsf
This is a link to a page with the different organisations. or you could also try
http://www.welfare.ie
Hope you find the information you need and good luck with the move
If your son is under 16 you can also apply for child benefit here too!!

the girl above me is right about the health service but if you're disabled you actually get quite a lot of benefits... There are some requirements I think but you can look into it and see.
Check out this site for info:

As an Irish person, I wonder why you dont stay in your own country and avail of the national health services as opposed to moving to Ireland and imposing on a health service which is already overburdened by too many foreigners choosing to move to Ireland just because its now a prosperous country.

I think she would get something if she has the right paperwork to produce. Has she ever been able to work? Look at this website for all about moving to Ireland.
www.oasis.gov.ie or citizens information bureau.

She should be entitled to similar benefits as in the UK, as a member of the EU, you can move anywhere in Europe and get the same benefits.
The government website is http://www.citizensinformation.ie
There is a website, thinks its called brits-in-ireland .com, you might find it useful.
And it's no longer called Eire, that's a romantic name given after the war of independence, it's the Republic now..

It's possible to transfer pensions for OAPs throughout the EU, so it would be worth checking out if you can also transfer benefits. I believe it is possible, contact the Social Welfare department.
