No shortening?
Is butter ok?
If so, just soften or melt (then cool) a stick of butter and add it to the confectioner's sugar. Add small amounts of milk until it's the consistency you like. If you want chocolate icing, add a square or two of melted Baker's chocolate. For lemon frosting, add a tsp. or two of lemon...etc.
Easy as...pie?

This recipe is easy to make and it tastes delicious. Whenever I make it, people always ask for the recipe.
Buttercream Frosting
3 Cups
30 min 30 min prep
1 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons milk
Cream butter with electric mixer.
Add vanilla.
Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all of the sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry.
Add milk and beat on high speed until light and fluffy.
To frost the cake, thin with 1 tablespoon milk if desired.
Keep icing covered until you're ready to decorate. For best results, keep icing bowl in an air tight bowl in refrigerator when not in use.
Can refrigerate in air tight container 1 week. Re-whip before using.

Butter frosting. I don't know the exact proportions because I just make it and here is how I do it. Take about a 1/3 stick of butter, melt. Start adding powdered sugar and make a frosting. As you go along I add evaporated milk to start to stretch and thin out. Add cocoa powder for chocolate or vanilla for vanilla. Just keep mixing and adding sugar and milk until you get enough to frost your cake.

It depends how big your cake is. For ever cup of sugar, I use about 1 tablespoon of margarine. (maybe a little more) Add milk or cream to desired consistency. Add vanilla, or any flavoring you wish. I like black walnut or maple flavoring on some of my cakes. Gives the cake a different flavor. You can also use food colorings. You can mix by hand or with a mixer.
