Why do many of my neighbours have what looks to be a bedpost nailed on the front of the peaks of their houses?

the bedpost is wooden and this is a new housing development

Are there lines that lead to the ground? Lightening rods so the lightening doesn't burn the houses down? Antennas?

lighting rod, flag pole, weather vane, or maybe just part of the decoration on an older home.
