What fuels my fire every morning? My work. At age 71, and disabled, I remain in the warm embrace of my life's work, the Shakespearean theatre. I also scribble, that is to say, I write plays. And I direct, teach acting to children with disabilities, run a professional theatre company, write essays for money, write poetry and short-stories, do public speaking gigs hither and yon for money, and, for the coming three years, I am touring in a one-character play all over North America and Europe. I am also an atheist, five times a grandfather, a vegetarian, a democratic socialist who votes Green, a male feminist, a straight supporter of gay and lesbian rights, anti-war, against the death penalty, a member of PETA, the NAACP, NOW, the ACLU, Amnesty, People of the American Way, and other civil and human rights organizations. I see no reason to throw in the towel, or put away my advocacy/activist activities, or stop giving my work all I've got--which, it amuses me to think, is a helluva lot. I thrive in the morning. I am alive and in the flow of life when the sun rises in the east. Thanks for asking, dear heart.

The small things that take my breath away.
Sometimes in the morning i don't feel like
getting out of bed, but then I think of the
possibilities and awsome events that might
occur and I get out hoping that something
memorable will occur.

SpongeBob SquarePants! Me and my son love watching it together. He's 19 months old and he'll grab my hand to let me know he wants me to dance with him whenever it comes on. Seeing the smile on his face is very much worth getting up every morning.

Now, you can probably figure out what helps me sleep soundly at night. I'm a family man.

the thought of a hot shower, a cup of coffee, hugging my kids, taking my dog for a walk, doing the crossword, going for a bike ride... things like this make me get out of bed. It may all seem mundane, but I enjoy it. Being alive is great.

Knowing that God has a plan and purpose for each day of my life, and that I am in the center of His will for my life. I am grateful for the fresh start of each new day, and I have confidence that whatever happens, each particular day, nothing can separate me from God's love. My God is with me whatever befalls.
