I've been using www.coolrunning.com's Couch to 5k plan. It's free on their site. It's taken me 8 weeks to get up to running for a half hour at a time. Some folks on my message boards were able to get up there in 4 weeks, some took much longer, but the secret is in paying attention to your body, breaking down mental barriers to your running, and going slower than you think you should while you're building the time. Endurance before speed!

It took me about 3 months.

I joined a marathon training in Feb. I was doing 1:1 (1 min run and 1 min walk) in the 1st 2 weeks. I ran 3 times per week with at least 4 miles in the weekdays. The Sat run was at least 7 miles and added about 2 to 3 miles each week. Until it got to ~ 26 miles, I recycled to start with 7 miles.

Then, I started to do 2:1, 3:1 on my 2nd month. I occasionally did 5:1 or 10:1. Starting from May, I could run continuously for 30 to 40 min without stop.

I ran my 1st marathon in June and completed the race in 5:45. Not too bad for a 1st timer. :)

It takes time to build the ability. But, no need to push yourself too hard. It all comes naturally. On a good nice morning, I can run longer. On a hot day, I can do less.

But, it is true that you need at least 1 day rest and alternate your workout every other day to cross training, such as rolling, swimming to build overall fitness to your muscle.

Well... if you run or walk everyday that's a start! But the average time it might take could be a few months... since you gotta learn to breathe while running and how to pace yourself... continue what your doing and just learn to excellarate a bit quicker and quicker each time... and remember to stretch!!! that's the most important thing since a torn muscle is the last thing you want. So just learn to excellarate and pace yourself so you can go longer without having to stop to take a breather unless you really need to!! Good luck!

Who knows? Everyone is different. But one fact is for sure, if you never start, you'll never get the answer.

I applaud your question because it shows your willingness to do something positive for your health and well-being.

Just some pointers to help you along the way injury-free.

Take a day off each week.
Alternate "easy" days and "hard days"
Pushing too hard leads to injury and disappointment'

Good LUck
