I suffer from Acid Reflex disease.
I'd kill to make it go away.
I go to sleep with heartburn and wake up with heartburn, i have heartburn nearly every day of my life and sometimes i cant even lay down without getting heartburn.
Standard medication such as Zantec 75 that my doctor reccomended isnt cutting it for me.
what are some other medicines (even prescription meds) that work very well?

Thanks!!!!

P.S. I cant chew Tums because they not only make me gag, but if i manage to get them chewed without throwing up, its impossible to get it to go down.

First of all, you need to deal with the reason you have the problem. Most of the time, the acid influx is brought on by a bad diet or drinking. if you eat greasy food, spicy food or drink, you have to stop for at least 6 months.

Second...Zantec does not work for acute symptoms but rather, after you have had treatment and you are in need of a temporary fix. Prilosec is good but the king of influx treatment is Nexium. Nexium is so good, you'll forget you have the influx and return back to bad habits in no time.

Tums is only good for a person who is in between prescriptions and is on his/her way to pick up thier meds.

If you can, get papaya enzyme tablets from the local health stores.

Or you could try drinking a shotglass of red wine or Kosher blackberry wine with your meals.

One thing I do that seems to help my husband is make a cup of herbal tea with a dash of ginger, a spoon of honey, and a spoon of sugar.

There is Prilosec OTC, but I hesitate to actually recommend this since it started making my husband ill.

If all else fails, you can go back to your doctor and tell him the Zantec isn't cutting it.

Good luck!

I have a small dose of the same problem, I use Bragg's Organic Apple Cider Vinegar from GNC or Vitamin World. Take 1tsp before each meal, the problem is not enough acid in your system and when you take the Zantac it then adds too much acid.

you have a cause for the heartburn---best you go to the doctors and get THAT checked into----you may also need a colonoscopy---I got one and it was found I had COLITUS and I had "heartburn" so bad that it erupted a MASS in my esophogus.... doctor put me on NEXIUM and the esophogus has cleared up and now I only occasionally get heartburn--oh I also ended up getting Congestive Heartfailure AND pulmonary hypertension along with the colitius, and that COULD have been a big contributor to the "heartburn" as well---and my HEARTBURN was HORRIBLE and constant.

Prilosec also offers a prescription that is stronger. The medicine that works best for me is Nexium. It is also a prescription.
