I'm going to assume that this is an honest question. Also you do not specify your faith. I am answering as a Christian - if you don't share that faith, you can adjust the answers. I have always advised people that:
1. God will never ask you to do anything contrary to his word in the scripture.
2. Ask yourself if you can picture Jesus doing it - If you can't, it isn't likely that God is asking this of you.
3. Pray and ask God to clarify his vision and will for your life. Ask him if what you are understanding is truly what he is wanting.
4. If you have serious doubts, pray that God will give you the gift of discernment so that you can understand the truth about the voice and the request.

It is important to make that distinction. While the demons are unable to hurt us, they have the power to tempt us. So we can also hear their voices calling us away from the truth. But if you follow the things above, it should help you discern the truth.

Let me tell you something from experience! When God is asking you to do something, you can know it is Him a lot of the time because He is impressing you to do something that you aren't comfortable with! It is not because He is mean, it is because He knows that it is best for you.

Reading His Word will enlighten your mind too. Have you ever just been in a really hard situation, and decided to read your Bible? And then you opened it to just the right verse? That was God speaking to you.

Those were just a couple of thoughts from my own experience in learning to listen for God's voice. Hope it helps! :-)

By its fruit ye shall know him.

Look at Galatians 5 where it talks about the fruit of the spirit. If you feel any of these things, then you can feel confident that God is trying to tell you something. If you feel confused or uneasy, then it may not be the right answer for you.

Study it out in your mind, make a choice, then go to God and ask if it is right. If it is then he will cause you to feel these things. If it is not then he will cause a stupor of thought and you will not feel at ease with your decision.

Best of luck!

I am going to say something TOTALLY RADICAL for a Christian to do. God doesn't speak to people. I mean he doesn't speak to people like it would be for a person to talk to another person. You don't hear an audible voice claiming to be God talk to you. Sometimes I will get a feeling, thoughts in my head, my conscious speaking to me and maybe that is how God is talking to me. Reading the Bible is a way to learn what God SAYS to you. I do pray to God every day, sometimes 2-3 times a day but God doesn't reply with a loud audible voice. No I dont not hear "OK I hear your prayer give me a few days and I will get back to ya". When things change in my life it makes me think back to when I prayed to God and I remember my prayers. That is how God communicates.

Once you truly know the word of God, you truly get to know God, and He will begin to speak to you , even more clearly, and you will learn so easily to distinguish His voice from that of the devil. Sometimes it is just a feeling in the heart, sometimes it is an audible voice, but God will give us discernment to just KNOW if we are obedient to Gods Holy Word and if you arent sure, hear what is said. Does it run right alongside Gods word, or run contrary to it? God will not tel us one thing in the Bible and something else as He speaks to us. NEVER.

Yes, indeed. Take advice from the local tribe elders.

I also agree with the answer below. Sometimes it just is against all that you think it is - but it turns out to be meaningful against a lot of odds.

Good point. God has the " English elderly Uncle with a beard and pipe" type of voice. When he speaks in Hebrew he sounds like Woody Allen, in the US he does a good Charlton Heston.

THERE'S the 64 BILLION dollar question! It's NOT that still, small voice, I'll guarantee THAT. Search the Scriptures, and call upon the wisdom of your local elders.

Satan's voice can ALSO be still and small. Trust me!

Do not use your intellect or logic. God will give you knowledge and understanding. Wait for it. Fast if God leads you to.
