some people are just mean like that. i don't usually give thumbs down. i always give thumbs up. even if i don't agree with the answer, but if it is a well thought out answer, then they get a thumbs up. the only times i have given a thumbs down was when it was a hateful answer like death threats and stuff.....
but others.... well we all know how some people can get on here....
try not to let it bother you!

I would like to see the thumbs down option, discarded and leave only the thumbs up option open. If you do not like an answer..do nothing....I like honest answers, even when when they are opposed to my personal views...To arbitrarily give one a thumbs down for expressing an honest opinion, especially when given in a respectful manner,is foreign to my thinking. I gave an R&S answerer a thumbs up,that responded to one of my questions, the other day...she had recevied maybe 35 thumbs down because of a hateful remark that she expressed...Someone like this possibly needs validation and attention as a human being to be broken.

Well, some people have stalkers that hate them and it wouldn't matter what they said it would be an automatic thumbs down. I guess they figure their whole life circles around those dumb thumbs and they would just be crushed if they got a thumbs down. It's kind of funny really.

A question such as "Do you believe in God?" is thumbed down by "militant" atheists that are acting as trolls.
Facts a fact.
I have looked into answerers that answer with what could be an answer to questions like this with a negative or severe negative reply. These are all atheists never a person of religion.
A former agnostic once told me that atheists really do consider religious people intellectually inferior.
So "thumbs downing" people that answer yes to a question such as "Do you believe in God?" is really saying; "How could you be so stupid" or "God is a fairy tale so you get a thumbs down".
Many of the people that thumbs down true responses in religion like this do not consider what they are doing trolling because to them religious people are lying to their selves hence others and it is a fiction.

Giving the thumbs up or thumbs down is a way to say you you agre or don't agree with that person. Instead of actually writing them down and singling them out.

That reminds me of a test I had in 8th grade. We had to read a story and then answer questions about it. One of the questions was "Why do you think...something about why the protaganist did something." So I wrote what I thought about why he did it. And I got it wrong. That really upset me. How can you get a "Why do you think " question wrong?
Anyway, sorry for the tirade. I usually only give thumbs down for hurtful, idiotic, or deceptive answers

I give out thumbs down based on the way the answer is stated. For example, if someone gives their opinion, and then speaks about it as if it is the only correct answer (and especially if they're offensive about it), I'll give them a thumbs down. I've given plenty of thumbs up to answers I disagree with, as long as they're intelligent.

Thumbs are for agree with or disagree with. I get lots of both every day. Sometimes for statements that I know will irk a few people, sometimes for statements that are utterly innocuous. Goes with the territory. I guess I am glad that Yahoo! chose the thumb as the digit to display, though. And, I, too, am glad to see you back again.

I think some people have to show their opinion of someone elses opinion. I've gotten thumbs down for just saying what church I go to. I also think some people, on certain questions, like just going through and giving thumbs down to people who don't agree with them.
Edit--I'm finding it amusing that there are so many thumbs down on this question.

I think peopl esee thumkbs down or up as a way of voting "I agree" or I disagree" with the response.
It is not longer used as an indication of a well-thought and well-expressed answer - so IMHO YA! should delete it.
