Take the Train. Cheapest, and they have maps. -Thats what I do. Cabbing it is far too much and if they know you're not from the area they take the long way and charge you more, most of the time.

midtown NY to downtown Albany is 150 miles. Allow 4 -5
hours due to traffic getting out of the city.
If your driving, take the NYS thruway to Albany, get off at Exit 23 & take I-787 into downtown (its not far) follow the signs
to the plaza & you should have no trouble.
Otherwise, take the bus, in good weather the bus depot is walking distance to the center about 6 blocks away, or take
a cab, there are always several of them around.

The quickest for me is by car on the Taconic, about 2 and half to 3 hours. With out traffic of coarse!

By car, the NYS Thruway I-87. You could also take a bus at Port Authority, 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.
