"there" instead of "their."
"weather" instead of "whether."
"athiest" instead of "atheist."
"were" instead of "where."
Etc.

Do you find yourself questioning the IQ of those who misspell or use homophonic words?

Man, just cause I don't know them, there calling me a homophone.

Sarcasm. Yes. Or when it's 10 times in the same question....
(also, diety. That makes me nuts....it's not even pronounced the same way.)

It is frustrating because the primary reason that we use correct spelling is so that people can understand exactly what we are saying. I often am puzzled by what someone really means to say on here. I think it's only polite that you give the person that you want to answer the question the correct spelling and meaning in the sentence....But I'm an old fart too. :)
But I must admit that I am less inclined to think that the question is serious or posed by an adult if the spelling is incorrect.
you forgot alot and a lot and allot

I question the school system for not doing a more thorough job, and passing children on who aren't qualified to go on to the next grade, and the parents who let them. Those are common typos, and at least we generally know what the poster is trying to say. It's not nearly as frustrating or annoying to me, as the ones who get on here, and apparently spend so much time "texting" all day that they have forgotten how to write in English, or that some people still read and write English, and not "text". It's hard to get through a post that is written entirely with stuff like RU, or gr8, or whatever, it just looks like gibberish half the time....

I would never question someone else's IQ, I would prefer to be thankful that someone has taken the time to read or answer my question. Someone I know who used to ask great questions and answer with such wisdom has completely stopped now because of the rude people on Y/A pointing out as you wrote "typo" errors. Sad isn't it

Me, I tend to overlook it. I never really had a problem with spelling as a kid, but others around me did. Maybe you need a photographic memory to spell well. English is a difficult language even for native speakers because the spelling isn't phonetic.

However, I have found that you can irritate people by spelling some things wrong, like moslem for Muslim, mohammed for Muhammad, etc. I do a lot of that.

Yes.

Although sometimes I make those mistakes too. Often though I realize it right after I post, but because of the slow internet connection it takes a few minutes to correct.

The atrocious spelling and the constant grammar errors that are constantly made here make we wonder if Bush's program should have been called, "All children left behind". The most frequent error that I seem to notice is the subject/verb faux pas.

I don't usually pay too much attention to spelling, excpet for atheist, I make a lot of those miskakes myself. I don't see spelling as that important when contrasted with sentance structure and over-all clarity of idea. Spelling is over-rated; learning by rote (spelling) doesn't always correlate with critical thinking skills. I think you can be a great speller and dumb as rocks.

If their ideas are jumbled or incoherent AND their spelling sucks, then I question their IQ.

And homophobic words, regardless of the IQ and spelling, says plenty of the person writing.

Yes it makes me crazy. Yes I question their IQ. If a post is full of text-speak I commonly skip it because it is too hard to read.
