If you had to pick one, widescreen HD viewing or digital 5.1 surround sound, which would you go with and why?

Only have the cash for one huh? I'd get a good surround sound system before the TV. Audio equipment prices are pretty stable. What costs $2000 now will cost $2000 a year from now. However if you wait a year to buy a TV you will most certainly save some cash and get a better performing product.

Audio first...... to me having a great audio system does much more for the overall experience of movie watching. And of course it also applies to music listening too.

I say go purchase your audio system. Perhaps a $500 Pioneer or Harmon Kardon or Onkyo receiver.... I always encourage people to look at Ascend Acoustic speakers for a great value. Specifically the CBM 170's when budget is at the forefront. Here's their web page

Then, wait for a nice 1080p LCD flat panel to go on sale......2 years no money down, no interest, etc. and get that.

That's what I'd do in your situation.

I would go with digital 5.1 surround sound. You could use this technology with DVD movies and other sources now.
If you would go with HDTV you would also need a HD DVD player plus 5.1 surround sound. What good would HDTV be if you could not enjoy it with surround sound.
