I was eating out at a chinese restaurant and took out a bottle of fruit punch out of my backpack to drink. My friend then tells me to put it away because it is appropriate only to drink beverages that the restaurants supply.

in some restaurants people take there own wine or beer and have to pay a corkage charge, you have to check with the restaurant first to see if its BYO, but that is on alcohol if its juice or soft drink you buy what they have

If you're going to eat out, the only time you should ever, ever bring your own beverage is if you're bringing a nice bottle of wine, one the restaraunt doesn't already carry, and you pay the corkage fee. For anything else, it's bad manners to bring your own stuff. In addition to impacting the restaraunt's income, you're implying that what they offer is somehow inferior to what you bring from home. If you can't afford a beverage, drink water! And don't forget to tip!

So if you ran a restaurant, you would be okay with the idea of people bringing in their own drinks rather than buying yours? If you sit in a restaurant, you eat and drink whatever you order from the restaurant's menu. If you have your own, you eat/drink it outside

Your friend is right. you shouldn't drink a beverage that isn't supplied by the resturant. I mean sometimes we already have a drink and don't want to buy another but it isn't appropriate

I agree with your friend.

I understand that lots of people take beverages with them wherever you go, but at a restaurant, either ask for water or drink one of their beverages.

Taking your own beverage is a breach of good manners. Either drink water or spend the money for one of theirs.

Depends on local & state laws and customs. Here in NC in a dry location you can brown bag a bottle if you dine in...quite acceptable....but check with local establishment first...Soft drinks ??? Never...unless you are allergic to everything stc..

Most restaurants won't allow you to consume anything that hasn't been bought on the premises

Bringing drinks from home is a little inappropriate, unless it's a place that is BYOB for wine.

I don't see what it can hurt. I mean parents will bring happy meals for their kids to restaurants that they know their kids won't eat anything at. So what's the difference??
