normal human pulse should be about 70. however in atheletic persons it can be lower, so if your friend is exercising regularly this may be normal and so the doctor decided no investigation is required.

but if your friend never do any exercise, then this heart rate would be lower than normal and worth to do some investigations namely an ECG especially if he feels light headed or has any other symptom. it is also possible that he has a naturally low heart rate without any consequences.

Bottomline, if he is atheletic then it is ok, if he is not fit and not athletic he should get an ECG

yes, the normal pulse rate is between 60 and 100/ min, under 60 is the situation called bradycardia. But, low doesnt always mean unhealthy, some people naturally have a low pulse rate. Anw, you should ask your doctor, h may want you to do some tests to make sure everything is normal :)

I'm showing my age here, but when Bjorn Borg was the man at Wimbledon for years in a row, his resting pulse rate was about 35, he was so fit. Sinus bradycardia due to extreme physical fitness. On the other hand, if it's 48 and you have a junctional rhythm and a bundle branch block, you're probably headed for a pacemaker insertion. The devil's in the details.

Your friend is either very very fit (athlete fit), or not well and may have a heart problem that may need checking out. Does your friend have dizzy spells, or actually faint? These can occur when the heart is abnormally slow.

IF IN DOUBT GET YOUR FRIEND TO GO BACK TO THE DOCTOR ASAP- it is much better for your friend to find any problem as soon as possible, or rule out any problem and be able to stop worrying

depends.. what was his blood pressure? If it was normal, then it probably means your friend just has a very strong healthy heart. (but even then 48 is pushing it, I would check the instrument used)

if BP was low as well then I would look to some other cause like medication, ecg/ekg results etc

If your friend is not an athelete he must be having complete heart block. Needs treatment most probably a pace maker implant.
