He possibly had a stroke?

He gave you ten years. Couldn't you give up something to come up with $100 to take him to the vet? Rearrange finances to pay a bill late, skip something, etc. That's ten dollars a year in payment for the love he gave you.

Even if you choose to let him pass to end his pain, it is still worth the hundred dollars it would cost.

"Don't say take him to the vet"

Why not? It's the only thing that will help your dog!

"I'll do that if there is no good answer on here"

I can already tell you that the only good answers on here will be the ones that tell you to take the dog to the vet. You have to realise, Yahoo Answers is not the place to turn for medical advice. People on here rarely know what they're talking about - they're not professionals!

Your dog is old, and should be being checked regularly by a vet so that problems like this are caught early. I think the breathing problems and the limping are in fact two separate issues - the breathing might be heart trouble, and the limping might be arthritis. Both common in old animals. This is the best guess anyone on here can make - because no one, NO ONE, not even a vet, can diagnose or suggest treatment without viewing the animal. Period.

EDIT: The classic stupidity of some of the answers on here is a fine demonstration of why turning to Yahoo Answers for medical advice is pointless 95% of the time.

Dogs pant when they are in pain, that may be what the hard breathing was, and the reluctance to move sounds like pain also. You could try keeping him off the stairs for the rest of today and tonight, and give him a gentle message all over. Make a mental note if any areas you are touching make him uncomfortable. Then, if he isn't much much better by tomorrow, you may need to call the vet. If he just has a sore muscle it would be better tomorrow after the message.
Another thing you might find during the message is a burr in his coat digging into his underbelly (this would be great).

I would say that he may have arthritis. my dog (who is 9yr) was limping and not feeling well so I took her to the vet and he said that she has arthritis gave her a shot and some pills. She is back to her old self now. that trip only cost me $33 (I only have little more then $200 to my name but I took her anyways.) So dont let your dog suffer, your vet might can work out a payment system, I know mine does.

Your dog is probably suffering from arthritis which is causing the limp, the heavy breathing could be a number of things, collaspsing teachea, fluid around the heart or in the lungs, my advice would be to take him to the vet - expensive or not, he is your companion after all.

If I were you, I would look closer when your dog walks and see where the limping is coming from. See which leg it is. Once you figure this out, I would lay your dog down and gently rub the sore leg for him. If this doesn't work, I would give him a nice hot bath with some oatmeal shampoo. If this doesn't work either, try to keep him off of his bad leg. I hope that this works. If it doesn't, like you said, you should take him to the vet!

As your contact, I suggest massaging him around that area. Just rub it a little, see how he reacts. If he is fine, don't worry about it, just keep him safe for a few days. If he seems to be in pain, I SERIOUSLY suggest taking him to a vet. Unless you enjoy torturing dogs.
