When ever I eat raw, uncooked apples, my mouth and lips get very itchy, but when I eat cooked apples, like in apple pie or baked apples, I'm fine. Everyone says that I'm allergic to something in the raw apples, but no one knows what. Is there an ingredient in raw apples that cooks off when you cook apples?

Thanks in advance!

The best way to find out if you are allergic to raw apples is to eat an organic one [I hate using the term ] or find someone with an apple tree. Supermarket apples are not real apples and are covered with pesticides and sometimes placed in sealed rooms and sprayed to prevent decay [ I cannot remember the name of the process ]. The other factor is pectin which is naturally occuring in most fruits hence the lady who mentioned tinned /fresh pineapple. Pectin can be lost in the cooking process.

I never heard of it put that way, never heard of people being alergic to apples or raw applec. Could it be that when you eat the raw ones the skin hasn't been washed good enough and what you're tasting is the pesticide?

Maybe you're allergic to the apple peel/skin. It is usually peeled off for an apple pie. Apple peels are usually coated with food grade wax to keep them safe during shipping so maybe you're allergic to some chemicals in that.

It may be that the skin has been removed from the apples in your pies, but it's also possible that something is NOT getting cooked off and your body just doesn't react as strongly if it has something other than apples along with it. That sometimes happens with food allergies or intolerances.....I am like that with peanuts, and my brother is like that with milk. If there is something being eaten along with it, we're not quite as sensitive

If you eat the peel that could be the problem, you might be allergic to something in the peeling, because most cooked apples don't have peelings.

Raw fruits and vegetables have enzymes that are destroyed when the they are cooked. I have a friend who is allergic to many raw fruits and vegetables because of this. Looks like it's applesauce for you :-)

Interestingly, if you put raw pineapple in jello, it won't set properly because of the enzymes, but canned pineapple (which has been heated in the canning process) works just fine in jello.

Wash your fresh apples better. There may be residual pesticides or other chemicals on your apples!
