However, if you are so inclined, maybe a gift certificate to the local butcher or Omaha Steaks... Home Depot... something he can use...along with a nice card that says thanks for being my knight in shining armor... or something to that affect.

I can't imagine that any but the most idiotic partner would consider the gift of a gas card, a gift card for home improvement, etc.--since it also benefits the family/partner--to be flirtatious or overfamiliar. It's a really GREAT idea for the circumstances. DO it!
