Yes you could. There are two possibilities.First if you have a mismatch of impedance between your speakers and amplifier and second pushing your speakers with an amplifier that runs out of steam .If the speaker impedance is half that of the amp. the amps power supply must double its current delivery to the output transistors Each time the impedance of the speakers are halved the power supply has to keep on doubling which means the supply will run out of current and fail to maintain the amplifiers output wattage or worse destroy the transistors.

If you have the volume control of the amp all the way up the power supply might run out of steam and the amplifier will produce no more power ,limiting the ability of the unit to deal with musical peaks which can send gross distortion to the speakers possibly overheating and damaging the speakers' voice coils. If you keep the volume down to a safe level everything will be fine.Actually speakers are pretty tough and would give you warning signs that they are about to get into trouble.Do you listen to normal bass (flat) or do you use bass boost.

Yes, if the amp is at max it could be making the amp over work and make the speaker distort or it could overload or something, random things like that happen, I blew a 2000 watt sub with a 200 watt amp because the amp was straining itself.

It's not how much you feed your speakers, it's the clarity of what you feed them.
You can push them pretty hard with clean music...BUT...You can blow them with much lower power if your sound is distorted.
