I would give it back if I could find the rightful owner . You could advertise it and not describe the photos , so whoever says it is his/hers would have to identify it by saying what the photos are of . If that didn't work , then I'd enjoy my new camera .

Put an ad in the paper. Tell where you found it and when, and give a contact number. When someone calls to claim it, ask them what pictures were on it to confirm it's really theirs.
Keep the ad running for a month. If they call within that time, give it back. If not, it's yours. You've made an honest attempt to return it, it didn't work, so you're clear.

Go through the pictures. See if there are some things in the pictures that can help the process. You said a church was in the picture, are there any close by that you know of that have the same look, then talk to the priest/preacher.

Take it to the police station ,if after a certain amount of time it is not claimed it becomes legally yours . Better still put an ad in the local shops or paper. You know you feel guilty that will make you feel good if the owner gets their pictures.:)

I wouldn't need to see that there were important pics on it to prompt me to return it. I have found wallets, rolls of bills ($20s) and other items. I return them or make the best attempt I can at doing so. Taking it to the police station or taking a "found" out in the newpaper are a couple of ways I have used.

Yes I would give it back. I would post a free "found" classified ad in the paper giving general details. I would then have the person claiming to own the camera to give me specific details. If they could then I would give the camera back to them.
After all, if you lost something of importance you'd want someone that found it to return it to you too right?

You could put up a notice in a shop window, but without putting the make of the camera or some such.
But yes, consider handing it to the police.

I would post the pictures on http://www.flickr.com/ and put a few free ads out on some free local clasifieds for someone to contact me if they recognize anyone. If someone could identify the actual camera as theirs, I would be happy to return it. The joy of returning an item to its rightful owner is great. Using sites like http://www.lostandfound.co.uk/ can also bring rewards. I'd want someone to do the same for me.

I would always try to return it to the rightful owner, by turning it in to the nearest lost & found. Regardless of what pictures were on it. It's not mine, so it's not mine to keep.
If I found something very expensive, I would leave my name & address; in many places if it's not picked up in a year it would be mine to keep, and sure, that would be nice :)
