Most commercial tinned baked beans such as Heinz are made from haricot beans, also known as Boston Beans or Navy Beans, a variety of Phaseolus vulgaris, and sold in a sauce.

I have had lima beans used in a baked bean casserole. It was different. Just like all the other beans you cook with, they impart their own flavor, but your recipe for sauce and spices is what imparts most of the flavor.

Navy beans, or sometimes pinto beans. Other varieties can be baked such as black beans or garbanzos, but the traditional Boston Baked Beans uses navy beans, also called pea beans.

Limas are actual beans. Navy beans, etc are legumes, not beans.

Great northern or white beans are most common. I don't know of any with lima beans.

The link below has several baked bean recipes if that is what you wanted.
