Experience lends itself to act out various impulses. If everyone let you through you would do the same until one person cuts you off. If everyone cut you off, you would rarely let one through. In UK, cross walks are repected, however in France they are hardly ever respected. When you are expected to act a certain way, you do it until your own expectations have been undermined regardless of the final result. I deliver flowers all day long, and notice that other delivery drivers and taxis are always courteous as I am to them. Regular drivers, like mothers and non-delivery vans tend to want an edge on the road. They perhaps feel the small advantage they gain in cutting you off will give them a sense of well being, and that letting you through will delay the satisfaction of reaching their goal. Their actions on the road are not based on calculated timing experiences. I know that when I arrive at my destination the recipient of my flowers may not even be home, so I am never pressed. When I drive a normal car, I notice that I can act more like others. However, I have experience over others in that I am often first to notice a restricted bus lane is no longer restricted but void of fearful traffic, or that waiting behind a bus at a bus stop, will actually put me ahead of all the traffic as I know that bus will move soon and turn into the others and clear a path for me. Experience of the road and traffic flow controls many of my behaviors, but safety is always first.

It does make you wonder. The first time I saw this kind of behavior is in Italy where the drivers don't stop for stop signs or stop lights or yield the right of way They will pass two and three abroad into on-coming traffic and force the other driver(s) to move to the shoulder and brake so as to avoid a head-on collision. Italians are all raised like "momma's boys".
This kind of behavior is now more common in the US because there is a similar psychological profile prominent in the population today.
Due to dysfunctional parents and schools and slap on the wrist punishments for murder and other felony crimes, people have become immune to self-discipline and team work.
The era of "me" means that only you matter and only others should be made to stop or yield for you and only your life should be a continuous flow of success and bliss.
Common courtesy and self-discipline are common only in people who were not raised by animals, like animals.
Good Luck!

Because many people are foolish, ignorant, selfish, arrogant, and impatient, and for them it isnt about who gets to the light first. It is simply an attitude of depraved indifference to anyone elses right to exist if they happen to exist in your path at that moment. It is a passive aggressive theft of infrastructure utilization. Simply put, only THEY have the right to be using the road at this time, and you should have been well aware of who they are before you left your house. In a more politically charged answer to this question, you might call traffic a giant lab experiment on the consequences of providing free society to people, without requiring any intelligence or character pre-requisites. Euphemistically speaking, if we let 10 year olds vote, dont be surprised one day if you see a stop sign painted like a big cookie, or a public pool that is changed into a big mud pit. Aggressive traffic is a reflection of the human condition at its worst. As most people do not like seeing the ugly truth about themselves, this concept is not likely to be a big community favorite.

I think a lot of us bottle up our agressive tendancies. We
cannot be rude, and nut out, at home, work , school or church
so we hold in, take a breath, and swallow. Then you are
someplace where you could conceivably get away with doing
some of the stuff you are holding back, wonder of wonder
without a whole lot of consequence. Personally I think it is
a coward's way out. But Worse, you are working on that first
heart attack.

well lets face it, we have all done it at one point or another, it is because we get impatient or pissed about the driver in front of us...Its like when on the road driving your blood pressure can go from normal to high in a split sec...then back to normal...but i really do hate the ppl who cut you off and then slow down, im like what the hell

Who knows? It makes no difference how fast you go you always end up at the traffic lights behind the car in front.

I do it when they ignore my turn signal, and I have to make a turn shortly. I consider it their fault for being an inconsiderate jerk. Otherwise, I think people do it when they're frustrated with being behind the person in front of them. Just a humble idea...

well i do it because they did something to me first. I also usually will not let a merger in if they have no blinker or are on the phone not paying attention. If they are on the phone and blinker is on and they are paying attention i'll let them in. or if they are on the phone and paying attention with no blinker i'll let them in. If they are a hot chicky I always let them in even if they are on the phone and not paying attention, and doing their lipstick with no blinker on.
People cut me off cus i have a Porche though. not very nice but that is the world today for ya. Even if i'm not on the phone, have my blinker on, clearly paying attention, have my window down and my head out the window, i get not let in.

Driving errors are typically due to poor planning and not looking and thinking about what is happening ahead of you.
