Why? Kentucky probably isn't any more infested with RRR cult lemmings than most other places. The PSEUDO-Christian lemmings of the "Religious" Radical Right comprise only 5% of the population (but see below for a caveat about that). 94% of all **normal** Christians are very ordinary, sensible, and tolerant people who couldn't care less what other people's religions (or lack thereof) happen to be. If he runs across an extremist, there, or anywhere else, he should just regard that person to be a nitwit, and walk away.

Kentucky's a nice state. I hope he has a good time there.

EKU is in Richmond Kentucky, about 45 minutes outside of Lexington. Richmond is not appalachia, in fact many commuters to Lexington live quiet, upper class lives in the area. I know you think everyone Kentucky just walked out of a log cabin and into 1876, but it has it's share of atheists as well. So your friend won't get "strung up" or shot for being an atheist, now if he acts like a snobbish, enlightened hypocrite, God help him.
