It seems we went into Iraq without a well thought out plan, didn't have enough soldiers to stabilize Iraq after Baghdad fell and when sectarian tensions broke out, as some earlier stated, we just simply blame the Iraqis and wash our hands of the whole matter.
Wow, how convenient for us.
I like Collin Powell's philosophy of the pottery barn rule: "You broke it, you bought it."
Yes, we did help break Iraq and need to stay for the chaos we bought. It was good that Saddam was executed but one can easily see, even without hindsight and straight from the get-go, that Donald Rumsfeld was too stubborn and arrogant to listen to reason from his Generals and advisers. The U.S. can't afford to leave Iraq we need to stay there and make sure Iraq can stand on its own two feet before we exit.
Trying to wash out hands of the mess and blame the Iraqis is a cheap and sleazy way out.
The way the war has gone is more Rumsfeld's fault than Bush's.

VIctory was already achieved in Iraq? where have you been hidding? the war on Sadam hussien ended with the fall of Baghdad. what is going on now is the same stuff that happened, and on a similar scale in the Philipines after the Spanish American war of 1898, once the people of the Philipines where freed from the oppressive Spanish Goverment, and the US tried to turn the country over to the rebels who had been against the spanish fro hears, they turned on the US and one another, and for 6 years they attacked there liberators, and one another, until gfinally a yung Major Furston from Kansas, said to hell with diplomacy, the newspapers and the argueing generals, he all by himselfsnuck into the rebels secret camp, which no one could find (kinda like Ben Laden), and made himself fit in with the other rebels, then after a few days, he just walked up to the Rebel Leader and took him captive at gun point, the 6 year rebel war was over, quick as that. Even President "teddy roosevelt" could not have donne it better. My point is to much political infighting there, and here, and the media running all arund with half baked stories, and the foolish Iraq groups who can't even control there won p[eople. Don't blame the President, he didn't promote or start the civil war, that is the Iraqis own falut, no one elses, and there killing there own people in more quantities than us troops. If the troops leave , they'll rip themselves apart, if we stay, we get blamed for everything the media and wack jobs can think up.

A victory for the US might be a secular, Westward-leaning democratic government that has ejected alQaida and is strong enough to protect itself from Iran's fishing in troubled water. The populace of Iraq could really benefit from the oil revenues. Realistically, those who can will flee to the West, those who can't will be killed or end up living in Medieval tyranny of the radicals.

Don't let anyone LIE or mislead you - we went to Iraq for 1 purpose - to get those mythical WMD - there aren't any.
SO there's no real opportunity for us to achieve our principal victory.
When we went in, al quaeda weren't active in Iraq, now they are. So suppressing terrorism has been a failure.
I don't think we even need to debate peace in Iraq. Who cares about democracy if your spouse dies today, your son dies tomorrow, your mother dies the next day, your uncle dies the next day, you die the day after that - who cares who killed them. They don't care if they were killed by US troops, British troops, Sunnis, Shiites or al Quaeda.
SO right now, pulling out of Iraq WITHOUT al Quaeda following up home would be a victory.

An American victory in Iraq will be the two we have accomplished, free elections and removal/execution of Saddam, and the one we haven't, a safer, able to defend itself Iraq.

In my opinion victory would be achieved when Iraq's government, military, and police force can deal with their problems without our doing it for them. Who runs their country is up to them and should be decided by Iraq's citizens
