My 2 1/2 year old daughter has been having diarrhea off and on for about a week now (she has it for two days, then it's gone for a day, then it's back). My kids don't drink juice, just sugar free kool-aid, and they eat about 2 or 3 servings of fruit a day, but I've reduced it down to just a banana a day for now. We just can't seem to kick this- does anyone have any suggestions? She is acting completely fine, energetic and cheerful. I'm taking her to the doc tomorrow if it continues.

A couple of loose stools for a day or two isn't really diarrhea. Especially if your child is happy and playing and acting normally Five or more liquidy stools in an eight-hour period is diarrhea. .

Kool-aid (as can anything sugary or with artifical sweetener)can cause loose stools, you might want to back off on it for a few days. Offer plain water instead.

The best remedy for loose stool is what they call the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce (not juice! juice can make diarrhea worse) and toast. Pretty much any starchy carbohydrate will work - bread, noodles, macaroni, pretzels, crackers, animal crackers, oatmeal, etc.

I would not give Immodium or Pepto - if this is caused by something she ate or drank or a virus, giving these medications can make it last longer. (They've also been known to give BAD belly cramps.) You want whatever is causing it to get out as fast as possible!

If the diarrhea is moderate, a healthcare provider may recommend clear fluids for the first 6 to 24 hours. Diarrhea makes children very thirsty. Usually the healthcare provider will recommend giving plenty of fluids if the child is not vomiting. The main goal in treatment of diarrhea is to prevent dehydration. Prepared drinks such as Pedialyte or Resol can help replace water and salts, known as electrolytes, that are lost through the diarrhea. White grape juice may be used instead if an electrolyte solution is not available.

After the first 6 to 24 hours of a clear liquid diet, bland foods may be added. These include bananas, rice, applesauce, and dry toast. Additional foods can be added slowly. Avoiding raw fruits and vegetables, beans, fatty foods, and spicy foods may also be helpful while the child has diarrhea. Reducing the intake of milk and other milk products for the first few days with diarrhea may also reduce stomach irritation.

You can also try the Pepto Bismol chewable tablets. They seemed to help my daughter the last time she had diarrhea.

Certain artificial sweeteners can cause intestinal upset including diarrhea.

Try just plain water. Also cheese can help clear up diarrhea.

You should take her to the doctor today, not tomorrow. When they're that small, diarrhea can really dehydrate then. When it goes on for THAT long, it usually signals the presence of a virus, parasite or allergy. It's encouraging that you're daughter's feeling good otherwise, but you really should visit the paediatrician.

Give her plenty of water to make up for the water she's losing.
White rice and white bread will help not to have such loose stools, but better to see Dr.

Dr is best if it keeps up. It does sound like you keep passing a germ back and forth and that is easy to do. Make sure you get clorox wipes and wipe everything you see down. Door knobs, phones, tv remotes and such. That will help keep the germ spread out.
