To answer your question requires a bit of explanation. As a K-9 Officer in Illinois we train for these scenarios. The K-9 is trained to ignore dogs. They should be non-existent to him and not care of their presence. Of course, when the situation arises, if a K-9 is attacked by an aggressive dog it will defend itself and his handler. They are trained to not back down to any threat until given an order to do so. Injured and maimed they will stay in the fight.

This begins in training with good obedience. It goes far beyond telling the dog to sit and lay down. He must listen when recalled even during the most heightened situations. A poster above added the cost of such a police K-9 dog and the need for agencies to protect their investment. Our particular dog cost approximately $12,000. In my own opinion I wouldn't let an aggressive dog have the opportunity to attack unless I had no other choice. I would be more inclined to put down the other dog depending on how aggressive it was. These scenarios are very common during residential search warrants where fugitives purchase and train dogs to attack Police as they approach.

Most police dogs are trained for one purpose and that's sniffing out drugs. If another dog attacks the police dog, the officer has the right to shoot and kill the other dog because a police dog is considered and officer of the law.

K9 dogs are trained to protect themselves and their master (the police). They will take extreme measures to subdue a criminal and they will take orders from their master to attack another dog that is attacking. K9 dogs are extremely smart and very well trained. Police Departments spend around $20,000 or more on these dogs and it is a felony to injure one just like it is to injure a police officer.

Police dogs are trained to use their K9mm pistols. If an aggressive dog would attack the police dog, then the police dog would shoot it in the face. I've seen it happen numerous times.

Good question, but I'd say it'd be about the same as a well-trained cop defending himself against another well-trained guy charging at him. I think with good training, the police dog would justbarely defend itself and be unscathed, just like the trained cop.

It would be natural for any animal to defend itself.
A police dog would have an advantage in a fight with another dog not because of training, but because of the "owner" with a gun.

I would imagine the trainer would call the police dog off, then shoot the offending aggressive dog. Far too much expense goes into training a dog for them to risk losing them.
