When I moved to TX, they made me take the written & the road test all over again because I have a disability, & they gave me a receipt for the license, & 2 months have passed, & I still never received the TX driving permit in the mail. I took the written test & passed it, & now I have to take the driving test.

How can I do that if the engine on the car I just bought smokes, & the car stalls? I don't have the money to get it fixed, & neither do I really think I have the money to rent a car. I need to retake the driving test before the 18th of July, & I don't know anybody whose car I can borrow, so my only option is to rent a car, but I don't have enough money. & I'm still driving on a New York license. What should I do? How can I try to take the road test & get my license before the 18th?

Contact the Department of Public Safety (where you filled out the forms and took the written part of the test), and explain the situation. Perhaps they can give you an extension or provide a list of companies that will rent you a car for only a few hours, though sometimes getting into a car and JUST driving it could make your driving skills worse.

First, after 30 days passed you should have called, or gone back in with your receipt and told them you never got your permit. Why did you let 2 months go by? Well, call or go in now to see what happened, and get the things you need.

On to the second question. The real question is, why did you buy a vehicle that had engine problems? When you had your mechanic check it before the purchase, what did he say? If you didn't have it checked, why didn't you?

So what are your choices now? Several. Fix your car, and take the test in it. Borrow a car from someone for the day, and take the test in that, or rent a car for one day, and take the test in that. Or, ask for an extension to give yourself more time to look at other options.

Also keep in mind your New York license may be no good now. Did you follow the rules and do what needed to be done when you moved to Texas?

Vehicle Requirements for New Residents

If you are a new resident and own a motor vehicle, you are required by state law to get a Texas vehicle inspection, vehicle title/registration and driver license. You must follow these steps within 30 days of moving to Texas to operate your vehicle legally.

Step 1: Get a Vehicle Inspection
Step 2: Apply for Texas Vehicle Title/Registration
Step 3: Apply for a Texas Driver License

If you didn't follow the above, I'd suggest you park your car and not drive it.

Lady, you do have some problems.

Call the Texas DMV and inform them that you haven't received your driving permit, and check on the status of that.

Rental cars aren't that bad, if you don't take the insurance. Another option may be to go and look for a car. Some dealers will allow you to keep it overnight. That way you could take the test and return the car, the next day.

I would think that if you moved to TX from NY that you must know someone in the area? Family, friends, co-workers?? Well, I wish you the best of luck.

Oh what a horrible problem. I am sorry I don't have any good suggestions for you; please accept my sympathy though. I don't understand why they would put a limit on when you have to take the road test, but I guess they have their reasons. Is there anyway extensions can be given?
