I don't personally know any famous painters, I know lots of very good painters, me aswell! But I really like Chuck Close, his paintings are so realistic they boggle the brain! And some he's thrown like bits of mashed up tissue of different colours onto a convas so they splat, and made something most people couldn't even paint! Here I put a google images result link below :)

Wait. Do you mean know personally, or just know of? I personally used to know Ken Cooper, an American artist famous for his water colors. He was a high school teacher when I was a kid, about 15 years ago, but now I believe he is painting in England.
But I know OF hundreds of painters. I don't even know where I would start on that!

There is Vincent Van Gogh who went crazy. He cut off his ear and sent it to a prostitute to show his devotion to her. He only sold one (maybe two?) painting in his entire life. He committed suicide by shooting himself. In his paintings, you can see the swirling manifestations of his descending madness.
Picasso is famous for his cubism art that creates incredibly distorted surrealist images.
There is Leonardo DaVinci who painted the Mona Lisa, and was also an accomplished architect who created lofty plans for huge weapons of war. The first helicopter and tank designs are credited to him.

My personal fave is Toulouse Lautrec - he was known for his affiches in Paris Quartier Latin. He was a dwarf and hung out with lots of prostitutes. They also think he invented lithography. He painted all these women, because he was intrigued and loved them too. His favorite was La Goulue - she was a can can dancer in Moulin Rouge.
