I'm 19 and have never even turned our stove on before.. I've never boiled water unless it's in the microwave. I'm not sure on things like tea-spoons, table spoons, etc. What's a good book for me to look into purchasing? Something preferably with pictures that starts with the very very very basics with some simple, but practical recipes.

Fanny Farmers is the cook book i started out with 35 years ago when I was a kid, and it was my grandmas. @ 21 I started baking professionally (self taught with fanny) and worked for 26 years at the same country club. I still have that same cookbook I started with @ the country club. lots and lots of advice in that book and on the inside covers.

Mark Bittman's book called "How To Cook Everything" is a beginner's book that covers every category. The recipes are fairly straightforward and simple and the book is explained very well. However, there are no pictures. So if it doesn't match the picture it won't matter. What matters is that it tastes good and you had fun being in the kitchen.

Go to the food network website, or any other bookstore, and look for the book How to boil Water. it is a great book for beginners in the kitchen. Also look for any of the Betty Crocker Cookbooks, Pillsbury Cookbooks, and Taste of Home has a great cookbook too. Hope this helps!

It's called "THE COOKBOOK" and it is from TASTE OF HOME.
It is considered the Cadillac of cookbooks. It has many sections with detailed pictures and instructions about everything you need to know as a beginner cook . There are a variety of topics from explanations and diagrams about different cuts of meat, How to cut a chicken, how to boil water. There are many recipes that even the most rookie of cooks can make. Don't take my word for it ; just get to your local book store and check it out for yourself.

Hi, I would suggest that you find a short course to attend so that you at least see for yourself how the actual cooking can be done before attempting to start from books.

Most cook books do not provide very good basic information as they assume people who buy these books have basic cooking skills.

Happy cooking!
