There are special sunscreens for babies, and you certainly should use them. Even covered up or in the shade, he could get a burn. I know, because this happened to me.
Your son is more than ready for solids. And not just cereal. Baby food is good. My daughter was about that age when my sister introduced her to french fries and ketchup. My daughter's favorite food even now is potatoes. You can let him feed himself little pieces of banana and cooked carrots, and saltine crackers or cheerios are a great way to start self-feeding. He can eat almost anything that he can chew with no teeth. Everything else has to be prepared for him--mashed, mouli-ed.
Keep him on formula or breast milk (served after food) until he's a year old to make sure he gets all the nutrition his body needs.
Get ready for some action. Once they become mobile, they get into everything! Be sure and give him lots of kisses now, because big boys don't let Mom kiss them.

There are so many sunscreens out there just for babies, you'd be better off putting that on them than have them sunburnt, hey.
About solids, my baby girl who is 8 months old now, was born 9lb 11oz, so by the time she was 3 and a half months, I started her on solids. I only gave her one small meal a day for the first month or so. Just some pureed fruit, then started her on pureed vegies. She now has her 3 meals and 4 or 5 bottles and is very content. I think 5 months is fine. Yes it did used to be 4 months, and i've read on the baby tins 'From 6 months', But all the other babies who started at 4 months are fine aren't they? Just go by your baby and if he seems like he's not satisfied with just his milk then definately try him on solids. Always go by your own child's needs, don't always go by what you read because of course all babies are different. You don't have to start them on the rice cereal, either. My 3 children wouldn't eat it. Some pureed pears or apples is fine.

First, sunscreen is fine. Get a good baby lotion with high SPF and for sensitive skin. Oh if you are really against sunscreen put him in a hat/long sleeves/long pants.
Solid foods are fun. My doctor said between 4-6 months. By solid food I mean Rice cereal. Try that first. After a couple weeks and he's doing well start with fruit like mixed pear and banana. SLOWLY introduce new items.
Good luck.

Don't hesitate to use the suscreens made for children, except perhaps on his face. A big floppy hat will take care of that. I remember taking my daughter out on the snow, and a slapped some sunscreen on her face, not being careful. She burned in spots where the screen was thin or missed. I felt awful.
As for following what is said about solids or anything about child rearing, the advice changes almost as fast as you can read a new book. Solids are harder to digest than breast milk or formula, so if your child is not gaining you should hold off on the solids. They're often given earlier to slow down excess weight gain. They fill the stomach with bulk that takes longer to digest, so he's not hungry as soon. Follow the adivice of your dr for your particular baby. It is not a contest to see if your kid can do things first.

If your question is in regards to baby food, then it could be too early (it really depends on the child, ask your baby's doctor). If you are talking about rice cereal mixed with milk then honestly I think you are totally fine, especially if he will sit up by himself. Just make sure the first meal is very soupy not thick. It takes a while for them to understand the new texture in their mouth is to be swallowed. Both my daughters started the cereal at 4 months and they are now one and two. They did just fine.
As for sunscreen I wouldn't take him out without it. My thought is that if they make swimsuits that small then there is a sunscreen appropriate too. I use an SPF 50 baby spray on version. It is easier to apply and the 50 is necessary for new baby skin to be so exposed.

My peditrician said putting sunscreen on my kids is perfectly safe...just make sure you buy the baby kind. And as far as starting solids, I also started giving my son rice cereal at 4 months, again that was based on my Dr.s advice. If your child can sit up and is begining to crawl, he sounds ready. However, you're his mom and if you want to wait until 6 months that's fine too. Good Luck and follow your instincts!

Use sunscreen!! There are plenty of child safe products out there....and it's better to keep you baby safe under any circumstances. Also you should start him on rice formula before you give him solids. He needs to get used to a thicker consistency before he learns to actually chew. Good luck, this is a very fun time, and very messy!!!

I took my son to South Africa when he was 7 months old. I really had to use sun cream, and it was fine.
Also, started to give him solids at about 4 months, just a little bit, so his stomach can get used to having solids in the digestive system, that's why you don't give them solids straight away.
But really, your instincts are very important. If you think it's too soon, it won't hurt your son if you wait one more month.
Good luck!

You should always put sunscreen on him when he goes out. It's better to be safe than sorry. There is no reason you can't start him on solid foods right now.Just make sure every thing is nice and soft for,Since he has no teeth yet.

I think you can start on solids but still provide enough nutrition through milk. I don't think sunscreen will hurt, if you don't want to use it just get a little portable umbrella.
