They say that it is a criminal offence not to display the sign. I do not want a sticker on the dashboard of my car. Only I drive it and I do not smoke. Does anybody have knowledge of this regulation. I live in Scotland where we have had a no smoking law for a while and have never been asked to display a sticker.

It's not a question of whether you smoke. The company are required by law to display no smoking signs in the workplace and as the car is a company car it has to have a sign. And it will probably need to be prominently displayed. Nothing you can do. If the car was yours it would be a different matter.

I work for Networkrail, and on our company infranet we have a document which states the law from 6am 1st July vis:

You only have to display this sticker by law if you share the use of this car with another driver.

The required by law sticker is actually a circular symbol, the same size as your tax disc holder. You can buy a tax disc holder with the no smoking sign on it and display that - it's legal and all you need. If you really are pressured into putting it on, then try using blu-tack, then you can remove it when you're not on business, but still display it to appease your bosses.

It is a company car. It is not yours. You may use it, but they own it. If they say to put the sticker in the car, then put the sticker in the car. Don't mess up your job over something that really doesn't matter.

Good luck

I am unsure of the law in Scotland but in England it is a legal requirement. I think it's more to protect the company if someone were to sue them for being damaged by smoking in the same car. Whether you smoke or not is irrelevant it is to cover them I think.

If the employer pays for the car, then put on the sticker. It's that simple.

Smoking is prohibited in company cars and employers are bound to display a notice in all their vehicles.

hmmm, it is strange that they're asking it now but I mean if you don't smoke and it is a company car then why not just put it in there? i think because the car technically belongs to them then they have every right to ask you do this. They have to abide by quite strict laws too to do with this smoking ban thingamy. Sorry, it sucks!!!

Well in effect it's not your car, it's there's. I must be honest though and say I wish all I had to worry about in life was a sticker in my car
