Clorox and brake fluid will work, but the smoke might be noxious.

Basically "harmless" rules you out. - You don't.
DO NOT, as another poster advised, attempt to heat
potassium nitrate and sugar.
Without precise temperature control, of which you are not capable, a rapid fire or an explosion can occur.

use potassium nitrate and sugar. You can find potassium nitrate in many kinds of fertilizer. Just heat them on a hotplate together in a 60%- 40% mix.
