Stay away from bars - you only find drunk women there.
Online dating is not a bad idea but you have to weed through the weirdos.
Connections through friends is a good idea.
Why not pick up a hobby - you can find lots of women when you enjoy a new hobby. My girlfriends and I go shoot pool or darts - I have some friends who are artsy types and hang out at the art supply stores (Michael's and Pearl's here in FL) - I know some girls who like to sew and can be found anywhere near a cloth store... choose a hobby you like and then look around for the single women.
They ARE out there.

Good women are everywhere, you just have to go out and live your life and start bumping into them. Trust me the good women are wondering where the good men are too.
You could also try some online dating services like match.com. It they are becoming a lot more popular and socially acceptable.

Go to places that you already enjoy going to (ex: gym, park,favorite bar, theatre, bookstore.. whatever) that way you will be meeting someone that you know you already have one thing in common with.

my mom used to tell me, "if you wanna meet a man who drinks, go to a bar. if u wanna meet a man who eats, go to a restaurant. if you wanna meet a man who likes to exercise, go to a gym.." and so on and so forth... i am sure the same thing applies to meeting women... i met my boyfriend when i applied to work at his store, and we ended up dating instead.. i guess i wanted to meet a man who had business knowledge... lol...
