Sara, there should be phone numbers posted in your area to contact the military. You could use one of those to make contact, discreetly. Expect some skepticism but they will be very happy to receive a thank you from you in whatever way you come up with.

There are numerous websites that will set you up with military pen pals. Some of these soldiers and sailors don't get care packages and this is a way for the rest of us to remedy that. There are so many simple things that we can send them to make their lives a bit easier while deployed.

The website militarypenpals.com lists various sites that will match you with a military member. Please keep in mind that these are not dating services. I've used operationmilitarypride.org and they are great.

Sending letters and care packages is a great way to show that you care. Whether we agree with the war or not is beside the point. I think we can all agree that these men and women deserve the little things that may make their lives easier while they are so far away from home.

Good luck with your endeavor.

So, what is your idea? I know that we always enjoyed things like a cook out, a game of football or getting mail. When we pulled into Perth Australia, the people there actually held a dance for us. In the U.S., if you were to go to a university and post signs advertising a dance for a bunch of sailors and Marines, no one would show up. In Perth, EVERYONE showed up! It was REALLY nice.

You don't have to be a biker and you don't have to be a vet. You just have to be willing to stand for those who have stood for us. It costs nothing to join, no dues and no meetings.
While visiting my son, I had the honor to be invited to help welcome home the 41st BCT/ANG in Portland, OR. My 10 year old grand daughter came along. She was so impressed and excited (met a bunch of the PGR bikers, the unit chaplain...stood tall holding her flag at 11:30 p.m.), that she is now one of the over 100,000 members.
